Yes I know people just spat their coffee out everywhere cause I said that.

No I am not against coffee or coffee drinkers, just wondering...

How many of you guys know people who have been heavy users (Sorry couldn't help myself) of coffee for 20, 30 years and have built up such a residual of caffiene in their system that they have to give it up.

A friend of my mothers has had to do this and now drinks all that evil herbal stuff. My uncle's stopped having coffe and gone to tea cause of the migraines he gets off coffee.

Anyone else know of this happening to people in their life?

Me, I dont have this problem, but I only drink pot coffe and pot tea, and that only as an event so...

Back to your cuppa's people.

I started drinking coffee when I was three. Yes three. My Grandfather watched me part of the time and as he ran a garage, it was easier to give me milked down coffee then interrupt his work. Since then I have drunk it regularly. Remember, I am not a spring chicken. When I was growing up we weren't fully aware of its hazards. Hey, maybe I can sue Juan Valdez?
But last year I got a wierd kind of virus now,. the kind that sticks around. It changed my taste buds, amongst other things. Coffee is no longer the heavenly thrill taste to me it once was. It now takes a very special event, or pot to get me to drink it. Looking back I now realize I was addicted to it. Had to have it or I got sick. Yes, shakes, headaches, bleary vision, stomach cramping and all.
Not sure what I have accomplished there though, in stopping drinking it, as I now drink tea. Not near as much though. So that's a good thing.
Funny Chef. When I get my headaches, I drink a cup of coffee and it sometimes helps. Hmmm. To each his own.

I've been drinking coffee since I was about 10 or 11... but I never do more than a few cups a day, and often times, I go without coffee for weeks. It's just something I like, but I'm not addicted to it. I don't get headaches, and caffeine doesn't seem to have much effect on me, other than bad dreams if I have some before I sleep.

I gave up trying to drink coffee for my 30th birthday, I'd always loved the smell of coffee but I couldn't stand the taste, I do drink tea like my life depended on it and I'm a real shitbag if I don't have my cuppa in the morning.

quick note from some one who doesn't like tea or coffee all that much, but lives in the land of tea drinkers. there is absolutely no point in giving up coffee and changing to tea, tea actually contains more caffine than coffee.

From my cold, dead fingers...

will you be prying my coffee cup! I'd sooner give up smoking! (I'd even be seriously torn between coffee and chocolate, if forced to choose.)

HEY WHAT A BUNCH OF JUNK IT MINNNNJE I TELL YOU MINNNEEEEEEE

Get away touch those fields and dieeeeeeeeee

NEVER NEVER COFFEE AND SUGAR THE NUMBER ONE ITEMS IN THE WORLD>> nHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAA

There is more to coffee than just the caffiene. You rarely see people savoring a Pepsi. There is a social aspect to it as well. Yes, excessive amounts can harm you. Excessive amounts of vitamins can kill you. Excessive anything can be bad. But really, it's more than simple caffiene addiction.

So, back away from my coffee grinder and nobody gets hurt.

Yeah I agree with the sexy kitten

Coffee Is my friend

Can't say I know anybody who had to stop becasue of the physical side effects of coffee.

However I have tried to get caffein shock. (happens when drinking too much strong coffee too fast, like 10 cups in an hour)

Not nice, definately not nice.

But I love my coffee, and need it in the morning. Coffee and cigarettes. MMMmmm MMMMmmmm Goood.

Can I get a caffeine I.V. drip please?

I seriously can't function without caffeine. Anyone who knows me IRL knows there has to be soda (diet), coffee or tea and I'm fine. Otherwise...pain, destruction, humiliation, and those would be just my hobbies LOL

Tea has tannin

Coffee caffiene...

Notice the difference?

In case you'd like to do a little research...

http://www.mochajen.com/coffee/caffeine.html

This is a fairly well-done report on coffee/tea/caffeine... etc.

Umm... Chef, you might want to do a wee bit of research as to whether or not your last post could use a touch of editing for accuracy. I suggest using Google, and the key words Tea Coffee Caffeine Amounts Research.

What he said!

I drink at least a quart of coffee a day and have been for the last 34 years. I hate weak, old or cold coffee. Six heaping tablespoons of fresh ground beans in a 10 cup drip coffee maker. Now that my friends is good coffee! And no, I've never had a problem.
My Dad died recently and he drank the same kind of coffee for about 70 some odd years. So there is hope! Hang in there coffee hounds! Down with Tea! Cast aside all soft dinks! Coffee forever! (must be all that coffee!)

Comshaw

The average cup of coffee, as well as a shot of espresso, offers about 100 milligrams of caffeine. Tea and cocoa have much less, and most caffeinated cola drinks even less. Large doses of caffeine—1,000 milligrams or more—can cause restlessness, sleeplessness, palpitations, and diarrhea.

I just wanted to pull this out of your research guide there...

And I dont think it does need to be retouched for accuracy, I do know there are traces of caffeine in tea but the major bit is tannin. The idea of tea having more caffeine than coffee really annoys me cause it is just so wrong.

Thanks neale for your help.

Bunn Pour-Omatic & Folgers

The way to start a great day.!

MRS. OLSEN vs. JUAN VALDEZ

I've been drinking coffee for over 25 years and I'm not talking that girlish Folgers or Sanka. I'm talking strong ass New Orleans blend coffee with chicory. The kind of coffee that puts a stain in your cup before you pour it from the pot...LOL.
And I cannot leave home without my 24 ounce cup of French Market.:p

I never drink coffee and may have iced tea once or twice each year. Usually drink lemonade, diet coke or pepsi (either regular or caffeine free, doesn't matter) or milk (breakfast.)

Coffee is my friend. I gave up drinking except for the twice a year drinking extravaganza, I gave up smoking, I gave up coca cola, I gave up eating too many fried and fatty foods, I gave up smoking joints, I absolutely refuse to give up coffee!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well guys esp. you may just want to start drinking coffee!!! Recent research shows that daily coffee users have significantly less incidence of Alzheimers particularly in men!!!!! They don't know as yet why but more studies are underway. Coffee anyone???

Tea and coffee alkaloid concentrations.

While Svedish chef is correct about the alkaloid in tea being mostly Tannin, and Neale being incorrect about the Higher Caffeine in Tea.

Neale would have been correct to state that there are more Alkaloids in a “Normal” cup of TEA than in the same sized “Normal” cup of Coffee, and since it is the alkaloids that are the active stimulating ingredient, a cup of tea should be used if it is the active chemical stimulation that is required.

I can’t be bothered to produce the proof of this statement, but I have read it several times in the past in different Pharmacology books. So doubt me or disbelieve me at your pleasure.

Here is the description of Alkaloids from dictionary.com

Alkaloid ( l k -loid )n. Any of various organic compounds normally with basic chemical properties and usually containing at least one nitrogen atom in a heterocyclic ring, occurring chiefly in many vascular plants and some fungi. Many alkaloids, such as nicotine, quinine, cocaine, and morphine, are known for their poisonous or medicinal attributes.

His doctor took my father off coffee, as it was causing him palpitations and other symptoms that I can’t remember, though I think headaches and migraine in particular may have been among them.

That was about 7 years ago, when he had just turned 67, he went symptom free for alkaloid poisoning for about 9 months then began to get the same symptoms back.

His doctor ran a series of tests and ask a chit load of questions, and diagnosed my dad as being allergic to the higher concentrations of alkaloids he was getting from his raised tea consumption, and then took him off tea and coffee completely, now if my father takes a cup of even weak tea or coffee his heart races and he gets headaches almost instantly.
