The important thing about cock rings is understanding how they work; which is by restricting blood flow out of your cock. Blood naturally flows even when you are hard, and will naturally leave your cock as your excitement comes and goes. That's nature's safety valve, and a cock ring stops that process.

That important information has some implications. You don't want to leave one on for too long because when the blood can't exit you can damage your cock. You have to choose a ring that is not too constricting so that with a break from stimulation you can soften up a bit and get the blood flowing. Have a good understanding of your size, and buy a ring that's just a little smaller than you are.

There are several materials available. I enjoy the hard rubber rings best, because I enjoy the weight but also because if for whatever reason my erection doesn't subside I can cut the ring off with a little effort. A metal ring doesn't give you that luxury and I don't own one for that reason. I am very small when soft, and (not to brag) much larger when erect. There are rings made of a very stretchy material that work great for me but I enjoy the extra weight of a rubber ring.

I personally never go for the kind of ring discussed here so far: a ring on the shaft only.
