You have to set your egos aside completely and be super flexible. I've done collaborations with three different writers, with no plans, no outlines, no handover notes. We each wrote off the other's content, then handed it back, till both writers agreed it was finished.
I read some of those stories now, several year's later, and can't always remember what is my content, what's theirs. It's not easy, but it's not hard, either. I suspect it lends itself more to pantsers though, I'd die tomorrow trying to cope with some of you plotters, and there's no way some of you lot could ever put up with my approach to writing.
Most of my "collaborations" so far have been taking turns being Beta readers.
I've had a couple friends review my stories, offer thoughts and suggestions etc.
I've done the same for them in return.
Not actually WRITING anything for each other, just pitching ideas, encouragement, constructive criticism etc.
The closest I've come to a more comprehensive collaboration was with @EmilyMiller on The Devil And Angel Em.
Since I was using her character, she helped greatly in keeping me on track and staying true to her character.
She would beta read what I wrote, and offer constructive feedback; what was working, what wasn't etc.
She didn't actually write any scenes, but made quite a few great suggestions for things that I used.
We worked very well together, no egos, and were both very pleased with the final result.
Hopefully we'll do it again sometime.
