Things to recall for

"The Long Cruise"

CLOSED

The River Cruise Boat, Independence:
  • Image
  • Home office: Guilford, Connecticut.
  • Planned course: the Intercoastal Waterway.
  • It left Charleston, SC, with 100 guests and 30 crew. After the initial disembarkation (Day 1), there were only 40 guests and 10 crew.
  • Headed east 20 miles into open water because of the mayhem taking place on land.

People to remember:
  • Captain of Independence: Penny Howard
    • 1st CO of the boat, which was on its maiden cruise.
    • Personal information coming.
  • Peter Douglas, passenger:
    • Gun runner for Venezuelan rebels.
    • Introduced here.
  • Kimmie Wilson, Master of Stores:
    • 18 years old, daughter of a Company employee.

Details about the Plague:
  • Believed to have originated in Europe.
  • Verified in the US Day 1 of RP.
  • Cities on Independence's course shut down immediately.

Day 1:
  • 80 of the 130 aboard demanded to be disembarked. (60 of 100 passengers; 20 of 30 crew).
  • Captain Penny Howard agreed.
  • All passengers and those crew departing were restricted to their staterooms for social distancing.
  • Those Crew remaining limited their movement.
  • Penny Howard needed to look for signs of the plague onboard.

Day 2:
  • A Coast Guard cutter pulled along side for the transfer of those leaving.
  • The Coast Guard Captain -- a former lover of Penny Howard -- transferred as much food, water, and other supplies to the Independence as he could.
  • Social distancing continued.
  • Introducing passenger Peter Douglas, who is a gun runner. (See #2)
  • Independence headed out to sea, with Penny Howard fearing they might run into trouble if they stayed within sight of shore.
