CLEAN computer

Hmmm sounds like you need to clean your history out by going into tools/internet options/clear history and clear your temporary internet files

I tried that many times, yet this asstr... remains. Can I reload Explorer, and if so... how?

If you have IE 5.5 or 6.0 when you go to add/remove programs and push the button to remove it should ask you if you want to install it, remove it, or repair it.

It might be a good ideal to have a browser on hand just in case.

If you do repair it it will set your home page back to probably MSN

But, thats no problem to change.,

Web addresses filling in...

For IE, select Tools | Internet Options | Content select the autocomplete button and turn it off for web addresses.

Clear your history, delete temporary internet files: Tools | Internet Options | both options are on the general tab.

Also, go to pchell.com to download utilities to get rid of spywhere or check your registry for it.

For recent files, bring up windows explorer and navigate to \windows\recent -- blow away the shortcuts you don't want around.

Search for the file types you want to delete or just do a mass destruction by typing the following at the command prompt:
del *.jpeg /s {this delete all jpeg files in all subdirectories}
substitute the other common extensions (.jpg, .mpg, .mpeg, .wma, etc) where you see jpeg above. You can use search in Windows Explorer, but this is faster.

Check the directories My Movies, My Downloads, etc.
Just blow away the contents of Temp -- nothing should really need to stay there.

Empty your trash.

Check again: dir *.mpeg /s to see if there is anything left.

Get a wipe disk program to overwrite all empty space on the harddrive.

A temporary quick fix option, and I stress the word temporary is "Internet Sweeper". It's a freeware product that you can find at www.bmesite.com . Although I certainly wouldn't use this for long term security, (it claims to over write but I wouldn't trust it), it will solve your "asstr...." problem.

Add/Remove programs doesn't install/remove/repair IE. It just makes the icons disappear.

To reinstall IE6 (and OE6), see www.theeldergeek.com/repair_reinstall_ie_and_oe_6.htm

Doing this may not fix your problem.

My favorite explaination is "autocomplete" turned on, see Tools/Internet Options/Advanced/ "Use inline Autocomplete".

The next one is that asstr has installed an app on your system for viewing. You'll need to find a program like Spybot or Spyware Blaster tools not the cleaning function and look at the ActiveX controls and applets installed.

You may have to go to regedit and do a search of the registry.... you may have downloaded a script that wrote this to your registry ..... if you find the asstr in registry ... back up the registry with it in there and delete it after... once that is done.... do a system clean like everyone is doing and you should be fine

Good Luck

They could still be retrieved from your hard disk with the right software. Sorry!
