"But will you be bothered?" Fiona asked softly. "I still did a terrible thing that I need to answer for. It's your job to bring me in. I'm not a girl that simply kisses a man as a flight of fancy. When I kiss someone, I mean it."

"I try t'keep my job an' my personal life separate... I still have t'catch you in th'end..." He murmured. "But I promise you, y'won't rot away in a jail cell, an' I'm goin' t'listen t'everything you 'ave t'say an' make sure yer treated fairly."

"We've got time. We can take things slow." Fiona said in a soft tone, knowing that she would rather take time to see what might be with Sam instead of rushing headlong into things like her parents had. "I want a relationship built on a solid foundation. Not one that might send me insane."

"Then we'll go slow," Sam agreed with a resolute nod. "I'd better get back before it's too late, 'r else Ma'll worry." He leaned in to press a warm and welcoming kiss to her lips, not quite as intense as before but just as thrilling in a quieter sort of way.

Fiona nodded, watching him go after one last kiss. She could hardly believe what had happened, but it's wasn't her imagination. She had kissed Samuel Ghis multiple times and she had enjoyed every single moment of it. He was infuriating, stubborn, and wreck less from time to time, but Fiona felt something in her chest that she was not accustomed to: hope.

Will was waiting up for Fiona in the den, tending the fire now and then while he looked at a book. He didn't know how to read, but he was learning rather quickly.

When she walked into the cabin, she paused seeing Will still up and waiting for her. "You didn't have to sit up all night to make sure that I got home. You have a patrol tomorrow."

"You're usually home early, so I got worried," he reasoned, laying aside the book. "Where were you?" He was curious as usual as to what she was up to.

"I was with the Ghis family, believe it or not." Fiona said as she sat in a chair beside the fire. "Samuel Ghis even walked me home."

"Are you crazy?" Will asked, moving to the seat beside her. "He could've arrested you anytime he liked." Then he paused. "Wait... why didn't he?"

"We came to an understanding." Fiona said with a shrug of her shoulders. "He'll still have to bring me in, but it won't be any time soon."

"That still really worries me. Why'd he change his mind? I was starting to think he liked chasing you." Will didn't trust that Sam wouldn't actually arrest Fiona in the near future.

"That is for me to worry about, Will." Fiona said softly as she stood and came to sit on the arm of his chair, pulling Will against her side. "I told you that I'm not going to leave you behind and Inmeant every single word of that promise."

"I'm just worried you won't have control over that when Sam gets bored of chasing you and finally drags you to jail," Will murmured, laying his head against her shoulder.

She let out a sigh, knowing that she couldn't tell him what had happened between herself and Samuel Ghis that evening. No one would know for a very long time if she had her way.

"How about I bake you a sweet pie to take tomorrow? I'm sure your friends would like that." She said, changing the subject to something a growing teenager could understand.

"They'd like that," Will said with a nod. "All of them ask about you all the time. They like you after all I've told them."

"I hear what a rebel rouser you've turned out to be." Fiona teased him, ruffling his short hair. "At least Ciaran Ghis understands that you simply love me and you're not trying to insight a riot."

"How about Apple and blackberries? I can make two for you to take and share tomorrow." Fiona offered as she stood and stretched. "I might make something for that scaredy cat Roman too."

"What's he afraid of?" He asked as he stood too. Invah was still a secret to all Inverness aside from the Ghis

"I might have called a dragon." Fiona said off handed, looking at Will with a grin. "The Inverness kipper herself!"

"Yeah right." Will rolled his eyes at her and continued to the kitchen to help her get things ready before he went to bed.

"If you doubt me, I'll have to take you to meet her. Your horse might be spooked." Fiona said as she pulled out the ingredients she needed to make a pie crust.

She had the sudden thought to make one for Sam as well, but she pushed those thoughts aside to focus on the task a hand.

"We can go Sunday if you really think you want to prove you're crazy." It was only a couple days away, his day off. He went to get into the larder to prepare the fillings, fairly handy with a knife after having found brief work with a butcher when he was ten.

"It's a date." Fiona said with a laugh as Will continued to remain certain that she could not summon a dragon. "And if I do, you have to buy me a bolt of cloth that I've been eyeing at the market."

"And what do I get if you don't?" He challenged with a smirk. Will had always loved making little bets with her since she'd taken him under her wing.

"Whatever you want." Fiona said with a grin as Will lit up at the idea of a little bet with her. "What would you like?"
