"Wouldn' want t'give ya a crazy idea li' that," Sam mused with a smirk before his dexterous fingers rose to help her free her hair. "Then again, after all tha' dancin' tonight, I'm startin' t'wonder if you like me."

"Don't hold your breath." Fiona said with a soft laugh as Sam pulled the remaining pins from her hair, the pale blonde locks falling in a cloud to the small of her back.

Sam's smile grew warmer as her hair was freed and he brushed a strand back behind her ear. His expression was one Fiona didn't have much experience with- one of unconditional love and undivided attention. The last time she'd seen such a look directed toward her, she was sitting with her grandfather as she was dreaming aloud about making beautiful dresses.

"I wish my grandpa were still here." Fiona whispered softly, letting Sam see her heartache and pain when she thought about the man that she missed so much. "To meet you. To see that I finally did get a job making clothing. To tell me that he was proud of me."

Sam drew Fiona in close, his expression softening further and his arms wrapping her up in a protective embrace. "He is proud, love. Any grandfather'd be proud," he assured her with a confident and soft tone.

"I still hear his voice sometimes." Fiona said softly as Sam held her so tightly, telling her that her grandfather would be proud of her. "He called me his little kit. I miss hearing those words, honestly. He was the only person in the world who wanted me, who loved me."

Sam could find no more words for Fiona, simply pressing a kiss to her forehead and hoping he could offer some comfort. He'd known great guilt and sadness growing up, but his family had always been there to love him, none treating him like Owen had Fiona, and he still had plenty of people left that were to him what Ephriam had been to Fiona. All he could offer was his love to let her know she didn't have to be alone anymore.

Fiona simply let Sam hold her, no more words being said as she relaxed in his warm embrace. He gave her such hope for the future. She had no idea if he knew how much he really meant to her.

"I love you, Sam." She murmured, letting him hear the words that she hadn't even used towards anyone else.

"An' I love you, Fiona," his deep voice returned, and he relaxed back against the tree with Fiona resting against him. Out on the dark Highlands with only the moon and starlight, Sam could almost believe they were the only people in the world, if only for a moment.

Fiona let out a soft sigh as Sam held her tightly, leaning back until they were resting against the trunk of the tree. It was dark out there in the highlands, but the moon gave them enough light to see by. She had forgotten how beautiful it could be out there in the highlands with nothing but time on your hands.

Her grandfather would take her camping, telling her stories late into the night before tucking her beneath an old blanket her Gran had made and writing until dawn. He would always make them both breakfast, no matter how little sleep he got, and they would hie the next day until they were both exhausted.

"Your Ma thinks we belong together." Fiona murmured softly, her head resting against Sam's shoulder.

"I 'ope my family doesn' scare you off. They're jus' glad t'see me happy fer once. My parents an' Rho especially. Ma's excited tha' I'm doin' somethin' fer myself outside work, after focusin' on nothin' but my job since I started trainin' for it."

"You mean you're willing to take time off just for me?" Fiona said with a grin up towards Sam. "I'm honored and a little impressed that I toppled serious Samuel Ghis."

"Not take time off jus' yet," Sam told her with a small smirk. "But maybe only ten hour days versus fourteen." He wasn't exaggerating at all, and his family knew him to work constantly even when he was supposed to sleep. Julia caught him up late at night all the time, writing and tending to documents and letters.

"Make it 8 hour days and I'll make it worth your while. You need the extra hours to chase me all the way to Loch Fae." Fiona said with a grin, pressing her forehead against his cheek with a sigh.

"An' how would you make shirking my duties worth my while?" Sam chuckled. "My brother migh' have somethin' t'say about tha'."

"He won't say a word." Fiona said as she kissed him gently. "Because your brother wants to see you happy as much everyone else does."

"They want you to be happy too, love," Sam reminded her. "Especially me." He gladly returned her kiss as if it were the most natural and simple thing in the world.

"I'm happy with you. I think that's enough." Fiona said with a soft chuckle. "And I sound like a hopeless romantic."

"Only a little bit," Sam assured her with a laugh, letting his head rest against her own.

The night was peaceful and it was dawn that awoke them, Fiona safely beneath Sam's cloak, protected from the morning damp and cold. The normally-hard and tough man looked so unguarded at that moment, peaceful as could be and unbothered by the world.

Fiona was content and warm when she woke, Sam's strong arms around her. He had tucked his cloak around her at some point in the evening, a tender gesture that had her heart warming.

"We could make love." Fiona murmured softly as they both lay there in silence for a long moment.

Sam's eyes opened at her quiet suggestion, and from how alert he seemed, he could well have been awake for some time. He was a bit surprised, as was evident in the moment it took him to answer, but his reply was calm and soft- "Tha's up to you, love." Unlike most, he found no embarrassment in such things.

"I've never done it." Fiona said, looking into his green gaze as he suggested they could is she wanted. "Well, at least not with someone like you. Isn't that what two people are supposed to be doing when they're in love?"

"Not always. Some do it fer fun, some t'relax... Gods know I 'ave before," Sam sighed. "But love... tha's a lot more than jus' foolin' around in bed together. It's a part, but th'way I've always looked at it... Any two people can get married an' sleep together an' whatnot, an' never really be in love. But I love you, Fiona, an' I wouldn' ever want t'rush you 'r make you feel like t'owe me somethin'. It's up t'you."

"What if something changes between us?" Fiona asked softly, afraid of losing Sam if they did take that step and he suddenly got bored of her. "To be honest, I like the thought...a lot but I also don't want to ruin what we already have."

"Nothin's gonna change because o' this, love. Except maybe me sneakin' off work t'come pester you," Sam assured her with a small smile.
