"Partly. They started out askin' what my plans were fer gettin' home. But they all asked about you after. Aunt Kay was particularly interested t'know jus' how close we are."

"Much closer than she realizes." Fiona said softly as she kissed Sam again. "I'll let you dance with me one more time if you want to go inside. I suppose an engagement could soften my resolve."

"One more, aye?" Sam smiled softly, taking her hands. They could hear the music fairly well even in the garden thanks to the open windows. They were alone in the cool night air in the garden as Sam swept her slowly into their second dance away from prying eyes.

"I won't be dancing at our wedding. That's where I draw the line." Fiona murmured as Sam swept her into a dance there beneath the ancient tree in the garden, no one else to see them. "And I suppose I could wear this dress since I know you like it so much. It would save an expense."

"Ma will be making a dress with Justin th'moment we tell 'er," Sam chuckled. "An' t'have t'have a'lesst the first dance with me, love."

"I'll never get used to the idea that I don't have to fight and save for everything." Fiona admitted as Sam told her that his mother and Justin would start to work on her wedding gown the moment that he told his family. "I would be just as happy marrying you under our tree with no one there to witness save for a priest or an elder and our drakes."

"My family'd still want a celebration, an' I would want yours t'come t'Inverness... But we can do tha', love. Just us when we make it official."

Fiona thought about it for a long moment before she finally shook her head. "No. This is for more than just us, Sam. If you do become king, our life will no longer be our own. We will have our private moments just as any royal couple has, but our wedding cannot simply be a small affair. It can be just for our families, but we both know that is a large crowd on its own."

"Then we'll a' least have a moment t'ourselves there. But y'don' need t'resign yerself t'pleasin' other people at th' expense o' yer own dreams, love. This is about us, no one else. We can do what we like."

"I'll leave it to you to figure it all out." Fiona said with a smile towards him, leaning in to kiss her handsome fiancee.

Sam gladly met her kiss and they spent quite a while longer in the garden before returning to the ball. Sam didn't flaunt his proposal as he liked to keep their personal lives to themselves, but he did let his Aunt know, and with Elhardt and Kjotva and Kjersten's families being so close to the Ghis, they were allowed that knowledge as well.

At the end of the night, Sam and Fiona were walking out of the ballroom arm-in-arm beside Christopher and Kayla. Christopher smiled down at Fiona kindly. "I hope you know what you're getting yourself into, dear."

"If I didn't, I would have told him to go on his way a long time ago." Fiona said with a smile towards Sam's uncle. "He makes me happy and I make him happy. I'm sure that will go a long way in the future as we go through with this crazy scheme."

"That's really all you need. You can figure out the rest as it comes," Christopher agreed. Before they parted ways, the royal couple said their goodbyes to Sam and Fiona.

"We'll see ya soon, Aunt Kay. Might be fer th'fighting... But we'll make sure Inverness is secure enough t'come home."

"I know you' take good care of it, love." Kayla said softly, touching her nephew's cheek as she bade them both goodnight.

Sam watched Kayla and Christopher go for a long moment before turning back to Fiona. The fact that they were going home to war was really starting to hit him. But he wouldn't let it ruin his last night with Fiona before he returned home and set to work.

"Go spend some time with them, love." Fiona said softly as he turned back to her with a forlorn look on his features. "It would do you some good to sit and talk with her. You worry so much."

"She's probably tired. I don' want t'bother her," Sam murmured, hugging Fiona to his side with one arm. "I'm alright... Jus' thinkin' about what we're walkin' into."

"I don't think that you would ever be a bother to her, Sam." Fiona said softly as he hugged her against his side. "We're walking into uncertain territory, that's for sure. However, it doesn't have to be all bad. You'll be back with your family and they'll be so happy to see you. We'll get married when there's time. Who knows? We might even decide that it's time to start a family of our own in there somewhere."

Sam looked down at Fiona for a long moment before wrapping his free arm around her, kissing her gently. He murmured when their lips parted, "I love you... No matter what 'appens."

"I hope that you do." Fiona said with a small smile as he kissed her and held her tightly. "I can't believe that I turned Samuel Ghis into a hopeless old romantic. Don't worry, love. I won't tell anyone."

"Take me to bed, love. Make love to me until we're both too exhausted to move. Then, I might be alright letting you go off to Inverness without me tomorrow morning." Fiona whispered to him, nuzzling against his cheek gently.

"Don' 'ave t'ask me twice, love," Sam murmured, whisking her away to their room. The moment the door shut, Sam had Fiona in his arms again, kissing her throat with a hunger though he took his time. They had all night, and Sam could sleep once he got settled in Gaiann's saddle. Fiona would be able to sleep on board her ship home with the drakes.

Fiona melted in Sam's arms, whimpering as he attacked her throat with a slow burning passionate kiss. She would miss him terribly and by the way that he was holding her tight, she knew that he felt much the same way.

Sam's hands came to rest on her hips and soon, just like many evenings that first week they'd spent making love every day, he pressed her back against the door, practically trapping her. His fingers were soon unlacing her dress, careful with the beautiful gown after how hard she'd worked to make it. As it loosened around her, Sam pressed a kiss beneath her ear and murmured, "Anythin' you want tonight... Jus' say."
