As Shannon came down from the temple, a hush descended. The people crowded the streets to watch, but all that could be heard was the tinkling bells and the bangles at her wrists and ankles. For five years, she had stayed within the temple, pleasuring the men of the town for the honor of the goddess. She was the most sought after of the sacred whores, and now she was being sent to try to save the lives of every man, woman and child in the walls.
The sun shone on her bare breasts and belly, and she walked with pride, hiding her fear. She didn't fear for her life, for that had been given to the temple when she first came and found her place. She feared for the people of the town, and all the other towns in the plain that had not yet fallen to the wrath of the barbarians.
Her people were peaceful, farmers mostly, and when they fought they used the same stone-tipped spears and arrows that they hunted with. The barbarians came with bronze weapons and a merciless savagery that knew only destruction. They had stopped here, surrounding the town, trapping the people within the walls.
"Spare us," the townspeople said. "We will give you everything we have."
"What will we gain by sparing you?" the barbarians asked. "When we can take what we want?"
They had no answer, until Shannon came out of the temple.
"They can force my body," she said. "But the goddess only gives her blessing to what is freely given. I will show them what they are missing."
As the gate creaked open, the barbarian chief's guards rode up. They watched her as she walked out, alone, the long green cloth wrapped around her waist and shading her face. The gate closed and she looked up at the men on horseback.
"Will you bring me to your chief?" she asked.
