It is what is missing in our National Discourse.

We no longer discuss or debate issues. We polarize them, and shout down the opposition.

Excellent Thomas Jefferson Hour program on civility. It's from January 30, 2011.

It would greatly improve the general board. The lack of it is what has lead to me placing so many on "ignore". Their comments add nothing to my knowledge of any issue. They are simply spewing hatred.

Listen to this program, consider the effects of this kind of speech, consider trying to improve how you participate in our public discourse.

The reason for that is because of liberals.

I know you've probably been programmed to believe that "both sides are equally responsible" but in truth that's not true. Liberals are the ones who always take some outrageous position then demonize anyone who takes an opposing view. I know you probably will deny this, but its the truth.

I would bet my life savings that if there had never been a New Left in the 1970s and subsequently, the "national discourse" would be, if not always civil, pretty darn close most of the time.

Liberals are the ones who say that its "immoral" to disagree with them. How do you have a civil discourse with people who are that arrogant and extreme?

Plus, the society as a whole is lacking civility. That is a result of the breakdown of traditional values that liberals have promoted for the past 40-50 years.

If anything the politics are still more civil than trying to jockey with fat people to get to the desserts at a buffet.

Most of these people clearly need an outlet. Spewing their vile hatred here is a lot better than many of the alternatives. What would their alternative be? Go to 4chan?

Listen to the program, he gives a great description of how to respond using the example of hate mail he receives.

There really are some good suggestions there, but you need to listen to the show.

Just blaming the liberals or the conservatives or the democrats or the republicans does nothing to improve things. It merely serves as an example of what is wrong.

We need to stop trying to fix the blame, and work together to fix the problem.

The responses above this point were made by people who could not possibly have listened to the program. Because the program is about 52 minutes long, and it hasn't been that long since I posted the link.

Therefor the people who posted their knee-jerk reactions do not know what I am talking about, and by extension do not know what they are talking about.

Listen, first. Then respond. Otherwise your response just makes no sense.

Civility rarely, if ever, changes hearts or minds or conduct. Civility implies that the other guy is worthy of respect and consideration when he's little more than a dolt or a monster. Most ideas and people profit from ridicule and exposure as frauds and villains and cheats.

A perfesser named Franz Boaz beat the drum for unconditional luv and unconditional respect and unconditional admiration for all, and twitterpated young coeds across the fruited plains. Franz never met any Nazis, though.

Tommy Jefferson was a fraud and coward and weasely wine sniffer. He bought Louisiana for 2 cents an acre and sold it to Americans for a buck an acre.
