MCCULLOUGH: He called out, Fuger, stand by me and impart my orders to the battery. but he soon became faint and suffered frightfully. I wanted to have him taken to the rear, but he refused, declaring he would stay right there and fight it out or die in the attempt. When the enemy had approached within a hundred yards, Lieutenant Cushing was shot in the mouth and instantly killed.

BOWMAN: Sergeant Fuger caught the lieutenant in his arms. He ordered two men to carry him to the rear. Then Fuger took command and later would be awarded the Medal of Honor himself. At the time, the medal could not be awarded posthumously. Lieutenant Cushing's heroism became something of a Gettysburg footnote. Veterans placed a small stone tablet with his name at the top of Cemetery Ridge.

Breaking: Obama to pin medal on in person...

:D

He can see fallen heroes.

Out of context and disgusting.

On topic: This is pretty neat, I also find it odd that he wasn't issued one sooner since during the Civil War era they used to award Medals Of Honor like they were giving out candy.

Whole regiments used to get them, others received them as what we would call a Purple Heart today.

Good reading.

Here's a nifty link:

Full timeline of issues: Like this one:
Eleven soldiers at the Battle of Bull Run perform actions that eventually will make them recipients of the Medal of Honor. The number includes*Dr. Mary Walker*who was involved in three major battles and became the ONLY woman to get the Medal.

I'm sorry that you have no sense of humor.

Should I say it in Austrian?

"Das war dumm."

Apparently they couldn't be awarded posthumously during and following the war. I guess by time they could be, Cushing was more or less forgotten about, in that regard.

It is just government grandstanding at this point.

Pretty soon it will be no more than a purple heart...

Yup, they changed a lot of the rules for requirements, turning it into a big deal rather than a standard award.

There is nothing funny about the Awarding of a Medal of Honor. Get some tact.

I was a Marine. I know an actual recipient; served with him.

2014-1865=149

Ridiculous.

I KNOW!

Let's go back to BEFORE the medal was awarded because there was some REAL bravery at Trenton, Valley Forge and New Orleans...

Ok. Mybad. But yeah, the top dogs got monuments, and many of the battlefields did as well, aka Fort Mercer and National Park in NJ.

This is probably the best I've seen on the subject, covers all the movements of the British and Revolutionaries, and names lots of names:

Score one for the little guys:

I have a great sense of humor when there is something funny..which is not the case here. You are a pathetic hate-filled low-life who spouts out garbage non-stop,and the world will be a better place when you are gone from it.

And the rank and file?

:(

They got what?

That's not the point. The point is that while real dangers are present and our military is in danger, the pols in DC are looking to yesteryear in order to look pro-military. It's nice for a few people to be able to say, "Hey, we had a MoH recipient in the family." It is not nice that as we are surrounded by danger and tyrants from ISIS and Iran to Russia to China and North Korea and our soldiers are being sent into ill-defined, ill-thought-out hotspots where their very presence is denied, in order to make good on a political promise/lie and our allies are being left dangling in the wind because our military is now nothing but meals on wheels and humanitarian aid.

How many of the dead in the Caliphate fight will even be recognized? It used to be a daily fixation with the Democrats here to tell us exactly what the Bush body count was, now you would think that no deaths were occurring on the Obama watch. Meanwhile, we are recognizing Civil War veterans for their sacrifice.

How many medals will be awarded to the brave troops of the Ebola Deployment?

I'll bet more than to the invisible troops in Iraq.

Get a grip.

Anyone who spews language like that just because of a disagreement in opinion is not a man, but a coward behind a keyboard.

Now you have proved it.

A typical tactic of those keyboard commandos who know that they are not worth someone traveling to kick their ass.

Hell, you're probably trying to catfish us with a fake identity.

Stick to the topic.

What is really accomplished by combing the history books to award redefined medals to people who were not eligible for them, but probably other awards, promotions and recognitions in their own time?

What is there other than attempt to manipulate optics for the civilian CIC who is losing every bit of credibility for his nation around the world, has destabilized the Middle East, with glee, and is looking the other way while Russia continues to assimilate another country in order to project military force to intimidate the other free nations of Europe and the Middle East?

Audie is probably one of the more important Medal of Honor recipiants because of how he was forgotten by the government after the war, and basically lived in a boxing gym.

How many brave men end up in a box or on a grate with no recognition what-so-ever?

It's nice to have the luxury of cherry-picking examples to prove just how worthy these men are, but he had his accolades in his time. He had his chances. He had recognition.

But, what is it that is really going on now?

Presidential Self-aggrandizement on the backs of fallen heroes?

Well, I got to go.

I have two eight-hour shifts to work today.

I may be a fallen hero by this time tomorrow...

;) ;)

Hell you little snot I'll pay your way...if you have the gonads to try.
