Dark black clouds covered the valley, where in a remote village not much was happening.
The children of the village had been skimming stones in the river, when it started raining. They ran under the old stone bridge for cover.
It was while under this bridge they soon began to hear the sound of violins, flutes and drums. The music grew louder and the children started to hear footsteps coming from the bridge above.
A couple of the braver boys braved the rain to see where the noise was coming from. They quickly returned.
“Circus, circus. The Circus is back” They shouted as they returned back under the bridge. This made the gang of kids explode in excitement as they thru caution to the wind and ran from their shelter, to above the bridge just in time to see the convoy of caravans as they crossed the bridge.
There was a man playing a flute, then a man playing a fiddle, then drummers surrounded by dancers. Fire breathers filled the sky with fire. There were jugglers, men on stilts and magicians.
The front caravan was being driven by a dark figure. He was wearing a big purple tophat and a red velvet jacket. He was toking on a long pipe.
The children watch as he stopped to a halt right in front of them.
“Join the parade children” He now asked, it was now the children saw the dark fingers face. He had a neatly trimmed black goatee, moustache and pony tail. He smiled and three of his teeth were gold and tattoos were visible here and there.
It was now when The Ringmaster saw a young lady standing with the children, It was oblivious she was a good five years older than the others. Her hair was getting wet and so was her white cotton dress.
The Ringmaster kept looking, watching her dress get more see thru with the rain.
“How about you young lady? Care to join our parade” He now asked her.
She didn’t answer but now the other kids did, cheering and jumping as the Ringmaster started the parade again. He looked back and saw the girl still standing in the rain, She hadn’t moved an inch.
“The Hunter spots his prey” The showgirl sitting next to him now said noticing him watching.
“You’re just jealous I don’t look at you like that anymore” The Ringmaster teased back as he grab her hair bun and covered her lips with his he then pulled her away laughing out loud as she pouted towards him.
It rained heavily all day and the Ringmaster decided to leave the tents packed for that day, this meant that the next day right at sunrise he set his crew to work, erecting the big top, and preparing everything.
It was once the big top was finally up that the Ringmaster noticed the same group of children now standing at the end of the field.
The sun was beaming bright and the men worked topless as they labour at setting up the tents and other equipment.
Around midday the Ringmaster saddled his white stallion and rode it round the perimeter of the field. After doing a full lap he approached the children.
“Young Gentlemen and Ladies I must recommend you to tell your parents to buy a ticket and been you to my circus” He told the gang, as he noticed the girl in the centre of the group.
Their eyes met and he was about to say something else when several older women came walking up.
As the women reached the gang they started to slap and moan at the children. It was oblivious these were their mothers and they now looked up at the Ringmaster.
“You stay away from our children” One of them shouted. He was used to hearing this kind of abuse from locals who were scared of circus folk.
As he watched the mothers force the children away, he saw the girl look back. Her Long curly Ginger hair bounced as she was dragged away. Their eyes met again and The Ringmaster knew he would see her again.
