I had a reader comment on a recent story:
This gentleman is European and was puzzled about the distinction, that circumcision is quite rare in Europe, and why was it even worth mentioning in stories (of evident US origin)?
I make this distinction in several of my works both published and in process on account of my wife's previous relationships with uncircumcised partners. She commented that intercourse is much more comfortable when her partner is natural, and prefers it if she had the option. Like the vast majority of American men, I was circumcised at birth, so that ship sailed several decades ago.
This prompted a bunch of research into formal studies. I discovered that 90% of US men are circumcised, and that it is uniquely American. What I could deduce was that neo-natal circumcision became routine if not mandated within the medical community here right after WW II, with no significant pushback until the mid-1980s. IOW, if a male child was delivered in a hospital, circumcision was the assumed preference, no option presented.
Research found a later formal study (1999) determining the entire premise - disease prevention - was so much hooey, that there was no statistically significant difference in morbidity including STDs between cut and uncut. What was especially disturbing in all of the studies was not one mention of female comfort in intercourse. None. Wow.
So I will continue to touch on "uncut" in my stories, as my primary female character has this preference, and pursues it when given the opportunity.
... Why do so many american writers seem so surprised when ‘the man’ is uncut (or uncircumcised) ? ...
