Chyoo story update highlighting

So, I've seen the "red" code in the page source to highlight new entries on some stories at certain points in the day, but then found them gone a few hours later. I'm wondering if anyone knows how the update codes are generated/modified in the Chyoo system?

It would be really nice if the code was modified to add a "last modified" date to each thread, but I recognize that such a change is really unlikely with how low of a priority Chyoo seems to be.

As far as I'm aware it's all based off of your cookies, the "new threads" red dot hangs around till you sign out.
