'Armpit Of America' Celebrates Bad Publicity

BATTLE MOUNTAIN, Nev. -- Being the "Armpit of America" is paying off for Battle Mountain, Nev.

The town got the unsavory moniker in a Washington Post Magazine article.

But the people of Battle Mountain are fighting back.

For the third year in a row, they turned the bad publicity to their advantage.

This year's Armpit Festival drew about 1,500 people to the northern Nevada town.

Sarah Burkhart, of the local Chamber of Commerce, says their festival is a hometown kind of thing -- with everything from boxing matches and wet T-shirt contests to an armpit beauty pageant.

The townsfolk also have an appropriate corporate sponsor for their Armpit Festival -- Old Spice.
