Because Christians are leaving the church, leaving organized religion.
I skipped church today. Again.
Last time I attended I was told, in no uncertain terms, that I had virtually no chance of salvation due to my - moderate - views. None.
I was told that unless I was defeated, broken-hearted, and crawling on my knees to God, I would not be welcome.
This was a guest minister as our church is still searching for a replacement pastor. He's not one of the candidates and this normally is not a holy roller type of establishment.
But no wonder people are leaving organized religion. No wonder there is a mistrust of these things. No wonder. What do they expect?
The moderate people are getting away from it all, leaving the die-hard, rabid followers behind and in control. In power.
Non-fascist Christians aren't defending it, perhaps, because they no longer feel they can be practicing Christians. How can you defend what confounds you? How can you argue for that which excludes you?
