You just pinpointed the essential falacy of qualitative research. Even assured of anonymity, people won't respond in a way that makes them seem easily manipulated. Polls make people feel powerful for a moment. After that, they either morph into Karl Rove or scurry back under the baseboards, or say something to explain what they meant.
