I've been frequenting a new burrito joint lately, at least once a week, and I think they make the tastiest burritos on the planet. It's called Chipotle, and it's a chain, and if one opens up near you, I highly recommend that you check it out. The decor is funky, the music is VERY cool, but the food's the thing. When you get right down to it, burritos are damn simple little contraptions, with just a handful of basic ingredients, so the secret to making a great one is to make sure that each and every one of those ingredients is as tasty as it can be, which is definitely the case with these burritos. Lately I've been scarfing down their vegetarian burrito, which has exactly 4 main ingredients: cilantro-lime rice, seasoned black beans, salsa (I like the corn and roasted chile variety), and guacamole. That's it. But it's the best rice, the best black beans, the best salsa, and DEFINITELY the best guacamole you've ever tasted.

In short: Yum! Go try!

Any other Chipotle fans out there?

I ate at Chipotle in my hometown last week. Except for the overuse of cilantro in the rice, it was excellent. That, and for $5 they're like 3 meals worth of food.

We had one take over the Hardees building near the school.

I thinks that's going to worth a drive by.

Thanks for the recommendation...there's several in Austin, so I'll definitely need to check them out this weekend.

One opened two months ago in my hood. I've only gone once because I don't like waiting in line.

Also, why can't they decorate more authentically Aztecan, instead of with those bandsaw caricatures?

I think the decor is kinda fun. There are thousands of "authentically decorated" Mexican places out there (I live in Southern California; I know whereof I speak). I suspect they wanted to be different.

Oh, and it's Mayan-inspired, not Aztecan.

There's one by our day care and one by our school. The kids like it and I really like it.

Did you know it was owned by McDonalds?

They are indeed enormous, which is why I've taken to getting the vegetarian one. I've also tried the Barbacoa (shredded beef) one, and it was indeed more than one meal's worth.

I've actually been to the original one.

We have one downtown now but I don't go there because it takes almost an hour to get there. But they have a great food. I usually go with a friend and half a burrito.

I live in SoCal, I haven't heard of them, but if they are good as you say I'm sure one will pop up around here, soon.

BTW...I tried the sour Altoids on your recommendation (that was you?) and I am HOOKED. Excellent product.

My new favorite restaurant just got a rave from the local critic. It's here. The critic's pompous and overblown, but absolutely right.

Oh and in the midwest is the copycat chain Tomatillo's.

They use the same recipes or similar since they were modeled after the original Chipotle

I know of this place. They are in Columbus.

It is very good. Yes. Yummy.

It is pizza night here, but I want a burrito now.

*whimper*
It's soooooo good! I love their burritos, but you have to go at an off-time cuz they're always packed.

I haven't bothered with Chipotle since Freebird's lives here. ;)

Dusty, it's in the same center as the Red River HEB....basically I-35 @ 38th.

i have burrito envy....

we don't get cool fastfood places around.....well.....take that back.....there is a new one......Raising Cane......just serves fried chicken strips and fries.....scrumptious.....i think they originated in Baton Rouge........;)

Freebird's is an Aggie legend, not an Austin legend. It started in College Station.

I like Chipotle, too. There's one near my gym, so I can get a healthy meal after my workout.

We don't have chain stores here (lol! I know! Downright un-American this rural stuff is!), but if I run into one in my travels, will have to check it out. :)

Lil Stranger,

ahhh the joys of living in "Big Sky Country".....spent 9 years there...Bozeman, Helena, Great Falls and Choteau. About a year ago I got tired of really living in the sticks here in MAINE and decided to go back. But something happened to real estate prices out there!!!!! So either it's gonna be Roundup or Baker or I'm gonna have to stay here in Bumfuck Maine. Other then various kinds of road-kill, there is nothing resembling a Mexican restaurant for 100 miles....
Looking for a long tongue that just won't quit??? My friend here has got 12 feet of non-stop, lick till you drop or he decides to eat you, wet and slithering, your gonna be in orbit, tongue. I had a recent transplant from a road-killed adolescent....packing 7.5 feet I am......:D

I sit corrected.

Of course, nobody cares what goes on in College Station. :p
