I am very familiar with the Belt & Road Initiative. It has nothing to do with spreading Communism. Its purpose is to facilitate Chinese exports and imports. There are no Communist governments or ongoing Communist rebellions in the countries where the railroads and roads and ports are being built. And since it is all being built in other countries, foreigners will get the benefit -- while retaining control of their own territory.

It's been 25 years now, times have changed.

It was the fervent hope of all the Western nations and if China were just integrated into the world economy they'd change their ways. No one seemed to have made plans for the case where they didn't change their ways. They've actually gotten worse. They've been emboldened and are essentially threatening anyone that disputes what they're doing. (Remind anyone of other groups you might think of?)

Once they believed they'd created a complete dependency on the crap they manufacture in the rest of the world they decided that the time was right to become the bully, threatening anyone, and everyone, that did business with them and didn't tow their line. They forgot a couple of things along the way though.

Manufacturing can move anywhere at anytime, it's just a matter of costs. Many of the facilities that western concerns built in China have now become fully amortized. They now have the ability to write those facilities off and take the tax write down. On tip of that new facilities built elsewhere can also be written off. From most of those companies perspective leaving China is a win.

Secondly as they built up their economy the workers in that nation began to demand higher pay, and rightfully so. In the case of some manufacturer's, especially clothing, the cost of labor has risen to the point of China no longer being so attractive anymore. Which is why they're moving to Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, and India.

Can they build home grown manufacturing that can compete on a global scale? Eventually that may come to pass. Depends on whether the population can be convinced that they should work for peasants wages for the "good of the party" as Xi's 'thoughts' dictates.
