China is almost finished building a series of islands in the South China Sea. This will not only increase the land territory of the country, it will give it land and increased physical presence in the region far from the Chinese mainland, strengthening its claim to the entire South China Sea, including its natural resources.
This is the way to colonize in the 21st century. Instead of taking someone else's land, you simply build new territory. Ingenious.
