China has ratcheted up warnings to the US about a planned trip to Taiwan in August by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, even suggesting a possible military response, according to new reports.

The behind-the-scenes rhetoric was significantly stronger than the threats Beijing has made previously regarding US interaction with Taiwan, the Financial Times first reported Sunday, citing six people familiar with the private message to the Biden administration.

The warning signaled a possible military response, the Financial Times said.

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman on Monday confirmed the report.

“We are seriously prepared,” spokesman Zhao Lijian told reporters at a regular briefing, when asked for comment about the contents of the report.

Well now. will Joe follow orders from his handlers in the CCP and tell her she can't go?

Generally, first lady is better known in China than other females of the US, but this Pelosi is an exception, many Chinese people are made to beleive she is the real and licensed wife of Biden due to so many public exposures. We do not know what is so urgent that she needs to hold face to face talk with Tsai Ing-wen, can it not be done through Zoom online conference? She is now ruffling the feathers of China when it is expecting a big national conference of the Party, on which all of the work of the country is centering. it is reported China's navy has made war games in South China Sea, the sea route to Taiwan, to disturb or prevent the advancing of the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan.
Last time Pelosi canceled the trip saying she got a Covid-19 in the last minute, what good excuse can she make this time if she fails to go?

Think wider context. The Emperor Xi will have seen what American military/industrial capacity/technology can do for a small motivated nation like Ukraine. That lesson transposed to Taiwan will not be lost on him. There will be much bluster: China will protest, Taiwan will treat Nancy like the 2nd coming (if she lets them - she probably won't)

There is a small scale precedent for this situation; two or three years ago a senior Singapore politician visited and was much feted in Taiwan. The Chinese protested loudly, the Singaporeans said , diplomatically of course, "suck it up" and the Chinese after a while went quiet and resumed good relationships again. Something similar will probably occur.

Xi will continue with a tough verbal line until his 3rd term is ratified in November. That will keep his own belligerent hawks onside. After that it might be a little calmer.

I don’t understand why Pelosi would be making what amounts to a state visit to Taiwan in the first place.
To follow in Newt 's footsteps. He was the first and last Speaker to do so.

I guess it’s traditional to pick fights elsewhere when in trouble at home.

Things must be pretty bad to scrap with russia and china at the same time.
Taiwan has been more of an ally to the United States than Ukraine. Joe is protecting his own interests in Ukraine. Remember the words of Barack Obama: "Never underestimate Joe's ability to fuck things up."
