It was another late night in his office, pouring through videos of the upcoming season. For Christian Bergeron, the first few games of the inaugural IWHL would make or break his team.
The Philadelphia Freedom were supposed to be the centrepiece of the new league (International Women's Hockey League), with the former NHL star as coach. He had helped get the league off the ground, with franchises in Toronto, Montreal, Boston, Detroit, Chicago and St. Louis. Many other cities were waiting to see if this would work.
After fielding applicants from nine countries, almost 400 women had been invited to training camps, resulting in almost 200 with contracts. NBC was poised to fill the XFL void, and shelled out decent money to the players.
Bergeron looked at his roster. Of his 26 signed players, 14 were Canadian, 7 American, 2 Russians, 1 Japanese, 1 Swede and 1 Finn.
His strength was in net, with the amazing LeeAnn Solheim between the pipes. He also knew he had good depth up front with Charlene Mineri, Sukya Yamazaki and Natalya Veriskova.
He leaned back, watching some of the Detroit Fire Wings during their training camp. Fast and physical, that's what they were.
OOC: I need players! I'll also need a couple of assistant coaches...let's see what we can do with this!
