it was a great movie, and yes, that is how the stage version ends. I saw the musical on stage a little more than a year ago and the movie is very similar to the stage version. all the songs were the same, they even used some of the dancers from the broadway version for the movie, and the story is almost identical.

I know exactly what you mean CB. I think it was really hard for them to create that whole razzle dazzle effect for the screen. It is a lot easier on stage, and I think a lot of that has to do with the actor/audience relationship that forms while you're watching the stage.
