A 6,500 square foot portion of roof atop the damaged turbine hall next to the ruined Chernobyl reactor #4 has collapsed under the weight of snow early today.
Fortunately, this did not affect radiation levels at the decommissioned plant and no one was injured. However, engineers are concerned that the steel, lead, and concrete "sarcophagus" structure hurriedly built over the destroyed reactor in 1986 is starting to structurally fail and could begin to collapse in the coming years..
This is why a secondary, and much larger containment structure is being built over the current one.
If the roof to the sarcophagus ever fails and collapses (or if the entire structure collapses) there could be a massive release of highly radioactive dust which resides inside the #4 reactor block.
