1,1,4-trimethyl-1-cyclopentene.

That was the answer to the last question on my homework.

Fuck chemistry. -_-'

*shudders*

Why the hell are you taking chemistry? Physics is where the cool science kids hang out.

:D

ETA: my sympathies. I struggled more in chemistry than I did in any other class I've ever taken. I still don't get it. Unfortunately for me, my husband thinks it's his duty in life to make me learn it. :(

SOMEBODY has to take Chemistry-- or there won't be anyplace for the physics kids to hang out in.

To the O/P did you get the answer correct?

Thank you Tatyana.

Mike, B.S. Physics a long time ago and long past a being a kid back then.

Yup.

I just hate it. And it's a prerequisite for the nursing program. I have to get a B+ or higher in it to be eligible for the program.

I get one retry. :(

I had to take chemistry in high school. In college, I took Physics, and I was the FIRST student my professor that could understand the mechanics and math of the curveball, could throw one AND hit one!! The cool kids hung out in the student lounge and ate pizza while reading/doing course work until the good, cheap bar opened.

It was just a picture. We had to give the correct IUPAC name.

Those are fun. Orgo is fun. Take a look at Khan Academy. He has a knack for making complex things very clear if not simple. Nice voice, lots of very short presentations, simple graphics. Free.

Since you are already taking orgo, don't start from the beginning. Just jump into an orgo topic that you need some clarity on. It will give you a nice framework for digging through your nearly useless $300 textbook.

 I know I'm going to regret this to the end of my days, but IUPAC?????

International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry. They set standards for nomenclature, measurements, etc. for chemists worldwide.

They are the ones that decided that the collection of carbon and hydrogen atoms in Cruel's first question would be called 1,1,4-trimethyl-1-cyclopentene and not something else. A chemist who has never heard of that compound can tell from the name how many carbon atoms, how many hydrogen atoms, exactly how they are connected, and know that there are no other elements involved.

All chemicals have a IUPAC name, but they can have other names and chemists sometimes choose to use a common name used for centuries rather than the standardized IUPAC name.

Shit, Piss, Fuck, Cunt, Cocksucker, Motherfucker and Tits. OK. I feel better...chemistry flashbacks are a bitch.

If it was over twenty years ago, it would not apply now anyways. They've changed it all. :D

When I took chemistry, it was a snap! Of course, back then there were only four elements in the periodic table. Fire, Water, Air, and I forgot the other one. Damn.

Whiskey...I'm pretty sure the other one is Whiskey.
;)

Nope. That ain't it. Whiskey is a chemical compound. You get whiskey by combining Fire and Water. We used to call it Fire-water in chem lab, but the common name "whiskey" sells better at the liquor stores. It's all about marketing, ya know.

Thats not how i get whiskey.
And growing up with a bunch of crazy Scots prohibits me from ever adding water. :D

I'd say ice but then you'd put it in the whiskey and water it down.

The only thing I remember from chem is 6.02 x 10^23. (Avogadro's number?)

I got straight A's in biology/A&P/Genetics but Chemistry flogged my ass.
