As a former employee, rather, indentured servant of Clear Channel Broadcasting, I am very happy to see that 448 radio stations and 72 television stations are being bought, rather, liberated from its storm trooper grip!
Clear Channel is the reason so may radio stations in the US, sound alike, have no news department, no committment to the communities they allegedly serve, and almost no people working at them any longer.
If a there is a Clear Channel owned station in your town, chances are you'll regularly hear DJ's and Radio Talk Show Hosts, who don't live in your town. They live one of two thousand miles away.
This is achieved with an unscrupulous system Clear Channel calls "Voice Tracking."
Here's how it works. A talent in Detroit finishes her radio show at 10 AM. Then she goes into a Production Studio, equipped with Clear Channel's "Profit" comouter system. In that studio she will create 4 hour radio programs whhich will air on 5 different Clear Channel owned radio stations in cities like ... Houston, Texas ... Harrisburg, Pennsylvania ... Schenedtedy, New York ... San Francisco, California ... and Denver, Colorado. In each city, she will use a different air name. All she records in the studio are several song intros, some program promos, several commercials and some DJ type banter. The computer system fills in the rest of the show with music, commercials, station ID's, and music buffers.
So, by using this one DJ in this manner, Clear Channel eliminate 5 other on air radio jobs. And sinc Clear Channel owns 1,500 radio stations, they have been able to eliminate thousands of on air radio jobs. Add to that the hundreds of radio news rooms they have eliminated at their stations and you're looking at another 2 or 3 thousand on-air radio jobs eliminated.
You may not be aware of it, but under the FCC Charter, YOU, the American People own the air waves. You have the right to make your feelings known about Clear Channels brutal tactics.
So, I would recommend you write your Congressman about this. Or, you may want to write Senator John McCain about it. McCain has launched a number of congressional probes into the tactics of Clear Channel. I'm sure he would like to hear from you.
I would also encourage you to stop listeneing to any Clear Channel owned radio station in your town or city, and encourage your friends to do the same.
