Cheering for the other team...

Tonight I was explaining to my fiance that even if I really wanted too, I could never claim the Toronto Maple Leafs as my favorite hockey team because my best friend is an Ottawa Senators fan. Even though I have four or five players on the Leafs and do own a fair amount of Leafs gear, I could never outright call myself a Leafs fan because that would put my best friend and I in direct conflict.

(For those not in the know, the Leafs / Sens rivalry is one of the more bitter rivalries in all of sports... Think Yankees / Red Sox without the obscene amounts of payroll orchampionships.)

Meanwhile (and this is where the thread gets even more Canadian...), I happily cheer for my Calgary Stampeders and will do so until my dieing day.. despite the fact I live in Edmonton (where the hated rival Eskimos play) and even more despite the fact that my fiance and future bearer of my children (at least that's what I think.. after tonight I'm not so sure...) is a tried and true Edmonton Eskimos fan.

(Again, for thos not in the know the Stamps / Esks rivalry is one of the more bitter rivalries in all of sports... Think Yankees / Red Sox only with more hatred between the two cities.)

She is having a very hard time understanding why I couldn't go into direct conflict against my best friend, but yet have no problem and actually enjoy going into that same conflict with her.. the future Mrs. Liontamr.

I have been trying to tell her that I feel our relationship is so strong, that a rivalry between our football teams couldn't harm our love for each other.. but a conflict over hockey teams - at least here in Canada - is much more of a serious challenge and a test between two friends even if that one friend has gone as far as to accept the other one dating and now marrying his sister-in-law. It just seems wrong to cheer on a team that my best friend would be quite happy to see fall off the face of the earth and never be seen ever again.

Ok.. come to think of it.. it is kinda silly I would cheer against the fiance but not the best friend.. but then again, if I didn't cheer against her favorite football team, when would we ever get the chance to bet on getting oral every night for a full week?

Opt for the opposite team definitely with the fiance...make-up sex is always super :D

heehee. You have a team called the Eskimos. *points*

I know.. fucking embarassment to our province and league.

I could always live with the whole "one team is Roughriders, the other is Rough Riders" deal.. I'm cool with the fact that the Toronto Argos change their logo and uniforms every second season...I even kinda liked the fact that for a while - thanks to the Indy Coltsand the NFL - Baltimore's CFL team was known as *dramatic drum roll* the Baltimore CFL'ers.

But "Eskimos"?! What kind of joke is that?!?

Then again, this is the same city that has just christened it's new baseball team the "Cracker Cats"... maybe regular, good sounding team names just isn't something this city does well.

Exactly!!

I gotta remind her of that.. some of our best sex has come from heated debates over our football teams!

Fresh personal one on one demonstrations of said event would be my suggestion :)

We would.. but she isn't feeling all that well...

But the first chance we get to 'argue', ya know I am gonna pounce on it! :D

My best friend and all her family are Wings fans, her hubby and all his family are Canadiens fans, and a good half of their friends are Leafs fans.

Imagine the speeches at the wedding, when the MC got up with a Leafs shirt on. It was bedlam.

Now that would be a wedding I'd wanna go too!!

Btw I should mention for Christmas, my best friend got me a Brian Leetch/Maple Leafs McFarlane figure... The fact he got anything related to the Leafs (even if it was a gift for someone else) was a major shock to everyone who knows him..

Her hubby got her one of those "This is your brain...this is your brain on drugs" shirts - specially made with the Wings and Canadiens emblems.

Mine just has the Wings and the Leafs on it.

I remember seeing those with Oiler and Flames logos...

That's one of the reasons I love hockey so much.. A fan can spend just as much time insulting and making fun of a rival team as they do cheering for and supporting their favorite.

Especially here. We're right in the middle of a number of teams, so we have fans of Toronto, Detroit, Ottawa, Buffalo and Montreal - plus a bunch of random other teams. There's always some good insulting to be done in the bars come hockey season.

Well, if we ever have a hockey season again.

Very true...

I'm actually starting to get pissed off with the whole lockout thing.. especially after tonight.

They meet for nine hours this afternoon/evening, are gonna meet again tommorow and now comes word that the NHL may be willing to budge on the whole linkage issue...

For fuck sake.. they gotta quit toying with the fans emotions, cancel the season and go back to being their stubborn, selfish selves.
