Tonight I was explaining to my fiance that even if I really wanted too, I could never claim the Toronto Maple Leafs as my favorite hockey team because my best friend is an Ottawa Senators fan. Even though I have four or five players on the Leafs and do own a fair amount of Leafs gear, I could never outright call myself a Leafs fan because that would put my best friend and I in direct conflict.
(For those not in the know, the Leafs / Sens rivalry is one of the more bitter rivalries in all of sports... Think Yankees / Red Sox without the obscene amounts of payroll orchampionships.)
Meanwhile (and this is where the thread gets even more Canadian...), I happily cheer for my Calgary Stampeders and will do so until my dieing day.. despite the fact I live in Edmonton (where the hated rival Eskimos play) and even more despite the fact that my fiance and future bearer of my children (at least that's what I think.. after tonight I'm not so sure...) is a tried and true Edmonton Eskimos fan.
(Again, for thos not in the know the Stamps / Esks rivalry is one of the more bitter rivalries in all of sports... Think Yankees / Red Sox only with more hatred between the two cities.)
She is having a very hard time understanding why I couldn't go into direct conflict against my best friend, but yet have no problem and actually enjoy going into that same conflict with her.. the future Mrs. Liontamr.
I have been trying to tell her that I feel our relationship is so strong, that a rivalry between our football teams couldn't harm our love for each other.. but a conflict over hockey teams - at least here in Canada - is much more of a serious challenge and a test between two friends even if that one friend has gone as far as to accept the other one dating and now marrying his sister-in-law. It just seems wrong to cheer on a team that my best friend would be quite happy to see fall off the face of the earth and never be seen ever again.
Ok.. come to think of it.. it is kinda silly I would cheer against the fiance but not the best friend.. but then again, if I didn't cheer against her favorite football team, when would we ever get the chance to bet on getting oral every night for a full week?
