I hope we're talking about photo-voltaic smoke alarms....?
The old type are the ones that go off when cooking.... the newer pv ones only go off when they are really needed.

During my fire scare a few years ago, the pv alarms went off when the bushfire reached the boudary fence and smoke drifted across my property......the older style ones stayed silent.
