I know this isn't really the place but could anyone out there tell me how to get chat working? I've tried the fix suggested on here and nothing doing! Want to know if it's me being a complete dullard or (hopefully) something else...

Honestly? I didn't even know there's a chat facility on here!? Unless of course you're talking about yahoo and others such as msn, gmail? (Now I might be the one being a dullard, whatever that means!)
