Chat always disconnects me within minutes of joining

I’ve been on Lit for several years, and spend a lot of time on the forum. Over the years I’ve logged onto chat pages many times but always get disconnected within minutes of getting on. I know it’s not from any objectionable postings. I’m just a pretty vanilla kind of jerkoff with no rude or mean posts. Anyone have any ideas?

Chat is annoying and it does not buffer well...and its a jealous bitch. if you are connecting with a mobile or wireless device it will happen much more frequently. As well as if you click over to another tab it tends to disconnect you...chat does not like it when you look at other sites and pitches a hissy fit. You can also try useing another browser. I am not sure why but I have found sometimes people on chrome seem to get kicked more than others useing say firefox or something else (not internet exploder..now know as edge.)

I really do wish i could suggest something better than that. You can also try clearing your cache and cookies. I have seen a corrupted tracking cookie can cause it to crash and disconnect. Sorry I could not suggest more.

Thanks for the response. I am using Firefox, and the only tab switching is directly in chat. This is on my iPad, and I haven’t tried their Safari browser, though I might. I know I cleared my browser cookies and cache a little while back but I’ll try that too. Thanks for your response.

This is annoying but it's not just the fault of the chat software. It's caused by an obscure browser feature called background timer throttling, which shuts down java script on inactive tabs. This usually happens after 30 seconds or so and makes the chat software timeout the user's session, leaving them in limbo.

Though it's not a perfect fix, you can mitigate this by making some changes in your browser. (This is for Chrome):

Click the three dots in the top right hand corner and select Settings from the menu.​

Click on Performance​

Under General, you'll see an option that says 'Always keep these sites active'​

Add literotica.com​

This will keep you connected to the chat server if you go wandering off to look at other tabs. However, it will only keep a connection to the lobby, other rooms will still timeout.

If your other rooms have stopped working, you can reactivate them by bringing up the room list and clicking on the name of a room you're already in. This will reconnect you to that room and to any PMs you have running from it. You'll probably see a number appear on the room tab in a red circle which shows it's connected again. Repeat this for any other rooms you're in.

This isn't a perfect fix, but the chat software isn't going to be updated so is probably as good as it's going to get. You'll still get completely dumped out from time to time, but making this change means you can usually restore rooms and private messages without having to log all the way out and come back in again.

Thank you. What’s interesting is that I haven’t used the Norton browser before, just have it for the password manager. I connected to chat yesterday using Nortons browser and had no problems at all. Haven’t tried today, but I’ll be using that in the future.

thank you Drusus I will let people know about this from now on. Sadly we have even seen some how people (i assume anyway) getting what we call ghost bans. The server acts as if they are banned but no one had done it. But it does get a fix if we run the unban codes. I assume it gives the server a kick in the shin and resets.

But sadly the chat seems to be held together by old twine and gum at times. this is very helpful. Would you have an issue with me using your post for others that have this issue in future?

The ghost ban thing is probably the chat not clearing the state for the user when they leave. I would think this was caused by an abrupt browser shutdown but hard to tell without more information. The software has to clear a user from its database when they leave which isn't always an instant thing. This is why it can take a minute or so before a user can log in again after leaving. Running the unban forces a reset of the user's state and then they can carry on as before.

The chat software is getting old now but I guess it's all we've got. Happy for you to use this for other users if it's helpful.

Thats pretty much what we figured. it works about 95% of the time we do...and sometimes people have to clear thier cache and cookies. we have only had 2 or 3 people this did not work..although I have a feeling they did not clear thier stuff and just thought we were wrong? or did not know how.

and yes its old and being held together with twine and old gum...but yes I looked up other browsers to post how to do what you suggested. So thank you for that.

Maybe they will upgrade eventually.

I took a look at Edge and it's fairly easy to do this through the menus. It's done using config in Firefox and users should be cautious about that unless they know what they're doing. Haven't looked at other browsers.

Don't know how anyone chats on a phone but they are much more aggressive about conserving resources. Moving away from a page immediately switches it off, which is why looking at a profile on a phone kills the chat window.

There is something the site admin could do to keep the page running but it's a bit of a hack. It's very unlikely that there will be updates to the core chat software.

I think Brave is similar to Firefox in that it's done through flags but it might be an all or nothing thing. The problem with switching throttling off entirely is that some sites keep reloading themselves in background and eat up all of your system memory. News companies do this a lot but recipe sites are the worst: 20 pages of animated crap before you even get to the ingredients.
