I would argue that there are a good number of people, at least in the US, who know nothing else about her aside from this rumor and its use in dirty jokes. Yes, I have to agree with you here. I am probably missing half the argument as all the audio, but it most definitely was a purposeful attack that had consequences then, and still today, given the historical knowledge of the average. Of course, all women of power have accusations of some sort of sexual deviancy. It is like the standard plan B, too intimated to come head on, invent something about her sex life instead. I would think, even absent historical knowledge, life knowledge would have everyone rolling their eyes as such an overplayed tactic, but even then some still buy in.
