Chaos... to be continued

Rhode Island. I spent a day in the police station in Providence once. Nobody seemed to have anything to do except go to the gym and drink coffee. I'm guessing RI isn't a hotbed of crime?
It is now. Lots of shootings. I refuse to go to the downtown mall that has the Dave & Busters mentioned earlier. Always violence in there.

And for a long time the Patriarca crime family was a big deal. Lot of mob stuff back then.

Look up the podcast Crimetown. Season 1 is Providence.

The coffee part is still true as I mentioned during my filibuster rambling trying to get us to 5000 posts.
So...Rhode Island is a hotbed of coffee? :coffee:

I am really new at this -- new to the forums, that is -- so I have never been on a thread that went over 5k posts before. I understand we're "in flux" right now, so to speak, but what would normally happen? Would Laurel lock up the thread, or would it have been the moderator for the Playground?

One of the moderators of the playground... it still might happen. One of them might go through and close a bunch at once and all of a sudden there will be a This Thread is Closed message at the bottom & you won't be able to post.

Whoever sees it first gets to start the new thread! Or we could preemptively start one and link it before this one gets closed, if it's going to be.

Not sure. I have seen one thread up to about 5600 so it reads as 6K on the thread list.

I suspect we may be able to have larger threads now. I think the recent crash was related to forum sizes. Two of the forums that didn't come back right away were the two largest. And Personals/Playground was in that.

Maybe just need some configuration parms updated. Don't know.

Do we get to put this one in a Lit Hall of Fame?

I manage web servers, app servers, and database servers on a small scale compared to what does on here. That's more than enough for me. This would be overwhelming.
A 14 hour crash like that would have hit our company's pocketbook big time as we have to perform to certain Service Level Agreements. So I'm basically on call 24x7x365.

Yessir. I have a friend in San Antonio who has a similar position, supporting a few local power distributors. We lost track of him for almost two weeks when they had that massive power & water outage.

Random question… how does one find Discord channels to subscribe to? I have one, but it seems like there’s more going on there & I have no idea how to access it

Ouch! That's, what? A 60-hour workday?
Client actually had to build me a temporary virtual machine, so that was on them. But the DB restore took a while. Don't recall how long.

Then it all had to be migrated to a new physical server when it came in.

The channels I am on are all private servers. Someone sets it up, and then they can send you an invitation.

Initially, we were merely using it for voice chat during our online games. It was just the latest after Ventrillo and Mumble for our gaming group. It has since become a much larger interactive community. My daughter is on a dozen servers with friends all over the world.

Edit: So, we still use it for communication while we're playing online games like World of Warcraft, but now I'm also keeping up with friends and family all over. We're sharing pictures, memes, talking, and they even have a Shadowrun game they're trying to talk me into joining. 😬

Edit 2: Realized that didn't actually answer your question. 🤦‍♂️ There are a bunch of servers you can search. I spent some time looking for an erotic writing channel, but I was not successful at it. There were an awful lot of adult role-playing channels, but they looked terribly skeevy.

Been on Lit too long, read that as "configuration porn".

Discord is mass chaos. Seriously the worst format ever.
