Changing Names and Needing Ideas

Hello, I'm a first time poster but awhile back a few of my stories made it onto the site under the name "Alice Wells." I have changed names and I'm starting over and right now I have two stories pending.

A look at my old ones would quickly reveal that they have anal/dom/humiliation/torture themes. While this works out okay I would like to try something new, in the more softcore school. And ideas or tips would be awesome.

Also, right now I write with little to no settings or described characters, I was wondering how well this worked? What is best for a reader?

Readers, in my experience, come in two sorts:
Those who vote 1 because you have too much sexual detail and not enough description of characters and locations;
those who vote 1 because you have not enough sexual detail and too much description of characters and locations.

There seem to be more type 2 than type 1.

Any attempt to please both results in "falling between two stools".

Pick which audience you fancy and go for it.

Snooper is right there are different readers who enjoy different things. As they say, different strokes for different folks, and there will always be some who you can't please regardless of which approach you take

I can only speak for myself and I tend to write with characterization, storyline and setting. Basically I do that, because its far more interesting for me to write, and frankly just writing descriptions of sex can get boring. There are only so many variations and mixes of the sex act.

Personally, I like to know about what's going on inside people's heads, their emotions, conflicts etc, and often that carries the sex, when it happens, in a more powerful way. The feedback I've got has usually been positive, and often readers get so 'involved' in the story that they want sequels. I haven't done any sequels, but the point I'm making is that some readers really do 'connect' with the characters.

My advice would be, write as you enjoy writing. If stroke stories work for you, then go for them, because there is a big readership and audience out there who love them. If you want to do the characterisation and setting type story, then start off small and see how it goes. In my view, soft core, such as romance and erotic couplings and first time stories are usually loaded with storyline and characters, whereas with the rougher stuff you can get away with cruder language and hardcore fucking.

Good luck either way, and keep us posted of your new stories.

I have posted a dozen or so new threads recently with simple scenarios that would support " simple strokers" ie sexually charged action driven stories of about 900 to 1200 words ( 1600 tops) with little character depth. Many are adaptable to incest (the most popular category), or Loving Wives ( a perrenial fave), or something else " gentle" like First Time or Mature. IMHO, these categories attract a wide enough variety of readers that good writing will triumph.

Romance and Erotic Couplings categories tend to get less reads. Romance readers want depth. BDSM, fetish, lesbian etc get less readers as well, and they tend to be particular about what they want. If you write in those categories, IMHo, you should read enough to learn the norms ( check out the top lists), and conform.

So there really is no middle ground where a story can start off romantic and go hardcore? I don't want to write the same "5'3" with blonde hair and perky breasts" stuff. I know, as a girl, I hate seeing that along with the hairless bodies and whatnot. But I have no idea if I should bother since my only semi-softcore didn't get much of a response. I don't want to write one like those I've seen that only make me kind of sad.

Are 'strokers' less respected?

I do not necessarily buy the " between two stools" fully. But balancing the hop from one to the other is only for the truly agile, because if you miss, you miss hard.

Strokers are less respected by some writers, and appeal to their own audience. It may be the larger audience.

I guess I never thought about it before so it's kind of a surprise. I have no idea what the 'respected' aspects are and aren't. Writing erotica as a serious story rubs me the wrong way because any hints of humiliation or submission and it gets a little creepy. As a story completely out of reality, a 'stroker', it's easier for me to rationalize the odd elements I throw in. I guess I'll try to write a 'First Time' or something with more realistic elements and see what kind of feedback, if any, that I get. As an English major I feel a little obligated not to... be too literary. I don't know if it would be appreciated or just detract from the point of erotica of any kind, unless, possibly I've missed the point.

I thought they were all 'strokers' of varying effectiveness.

Good idea though ClaireBlossom!

Hi ClaireBlossom. Uncle Pervey here, and I really enjoy creating characters, and sometimes, even light plots! I think your idea is worthy, and if you want to contact me directly at, "jkb@cookeville.com" I'll be more than happy to discuss your ideas and needs. John, (Uncle Pervey!)
