I have been going through so many changes during the past year, some of them intensely difficult, some of them merely inconvenient. But, I am still somehow managing to survive intact. The middle of life is tough. For some reason, I wasn't expecting that until it gradually slipped up on me. Everything is shifting...my sense of self, my perceptions of life, my attitudes toward love and sex. Some of these shifts are easy to bear, and I am even grateful for them. Some of them, not so much.

I have read that the human being's 'happiness' level follows a 'U' pattern, with the human finding great happiness during the first part of life and again at the end, but with a distinctive dip in the middle. I don't know if that's true or not, but when you're in the middle, it feels like it might be. The things that I've left behind are not things I want to carry forward into the second half of my journey. But, there is a huge unknown factor about what awaits me.

This little post is just for me to share my changes and anybody to share their own experiences of change in their life cycle. :rose:

Being in the middle now, I understand your point. My friends and I have talked about this; how Christmas becomes a chore, not somethign you eagerly anticipate. How traveling is fun, yet not as mysterious as it once was. How when going to Medieval Times dinner restaurant you think about how expensive it is, not the beautiful horses, sword fights, and lovely wenches. It's hard to find as much happiness as the golden eyes of youth provide.

On a nice note, damn is it fun to watch all those happy youths act incredibly foolish at times. It makes me happy to be in at the bottom of the U. :D

As far as taking things with us on the second half of our journey: I'm not sure there are things we can leave behind. We are a culmination of experiences, for good or bad. I just hope that the experiences I've delivered weigh more on the good side. :)

In this day of amazing medical advances, I'm not sure where the middle of one's life really is any more. As a first phase Baby Boomer, I am possibly on the upswing of the U. Life could be better, admittedly, but all in all, it's good.

I've sampled all three. Here is what I believe.

Kids have grossly unrealistic expectations for everything, and about 30 they get a wakeup call alerting them that things aint so wonderful as they expected. So they go back to school, divorce, take up mountain climbing, come out of the closet, whatever. Deluded once more, they believe they hold the winning hand to happiness. Soon afterward they wake up one morning and have neck wattles, the boobs sag, they have bingo-wings, they cant do it all night anymore, and the new diploma or sexual orientation or lover has changed nothing. Then you come to phase 3. You can laugh at yourself and go have a good cheeseburger & rootbeer, or you keep chasing rainbows and be miserable.

Well, there is no doubt that change is the one constant as we go through this life. And, in my earlier days, in the greenness of my youth, I was able to take my lumps with a grain of salt and move on. The lumps just seem to get a little harder to swallow as you age, I guess. LOL. In any case, I'm awfully glad to have attained this age of life, and I hope that I've gained some wisdom after making some rather idiotic mistakes along the road. I'm sure I'll make some more, but hopefully not the same ones. :)

Worse, in my opinion, are the errors others make that play hell with your life. They are so obvious when youre mature, and invisible to all but yourself and those like you.

You might have a point about the u shape. I had the most horrible childhood and teens and most of my twenties. I was miserable. I was suicidal at ten. But since about 28 (I'm 37) my life had really looked up and I am enjoying unprecedented happiness. I had my mid life crisis right before things turned around. I change a lot and came out the other side much better. Don't view the change negatively. It could be an opportunity for personal growth.
