Since you're changing the rules in the middle of the game, is is possible that I might just drop the kids off at the local office of the franchise tax board? You can probably deal with the kids, since I sure as hell can't.

To help balance its budget, California has reduced the state tax credit for dependents.

The change will increase a family's California taxes for 2009 by about $210 per dependent compared with 2008.

A family with one dependent that normally gets a state-tax refund will get back $210 less when they file their 2009 return next year. A family that normally owes money will have to pay $210 more. Multiply that by two or more dependents, and it really adds up.

Our governor wants to raise our state income tax. Cutting deductions for families, many more of which are struggling than "usual," amounts to the same thing. The banks and other major corporations fuck up, so businesses disappear, people lose their jobs, and the state is bringing in less money. So they make things even harder for us by making us pay more in taxes.

It's the same fucking story. Corporations fuck up out of greed and stupidity and get government bailouts, and honest, hard-working people have to pay the price.

I won't. At least not to the FTB, although I do now to the BOE. Social Security income is exempt and my wife and I are both over 65, so our other income would have to almost double for us to need to pay any state income taxes.

They have no authority to tax Social Security benefits. I don't know if they would be able to change the over 65 deduction.

Your description is apt about the Board of Equalization. They are out to rip off anybody they can, any time they can, for as much as they can. In other words, they arer a typical taxing agency.
