Okay help me out here... if someone is talking about the 17th century.... what is the dates that they are using.....

Thanks Cloudy... that's what I thought I just wanted to double check myself. Your great. :rose:

1601 thru 1700

Thank you incubus, like I said to Cloudy....I thought I knew I just wanted to make sure.

**I was fairly certain that the rule on centuries was if it says 17th century then its the 1600... 13th century then its the 1200**

Thank you both.

Wtach out for the missing days!

Because Britain and its Empire, that included the 13 American Colonies, didn't adopt the Gregorian Calendar until much later than most Catholic countries, there were some days dropped to adjust:

Wednesday, 2 September 1752 was followed by Thursday, 14 September 1752 to account for 29 February 1700 (Julian).

BUT some countries changed dates in the 17th Century...

Og you are my main man on that side of the pond... here is why I am asking... I am looking for Rom (Gypsy) names but they have to be pre 17th century in nature. It is why I was asking the original question.

17th Century Romany names? Phew, Liz, when you decide to go obscure, you don't fool around. Good luck on that one. :D

Not a lot of info on that subject as they didn't, I believe, keep written records. Try here, and here if you haven't already.

I don't know about Romany names pre-17th century, but I was jus tlooking at the passenger list for the Mayflower (pilgrims), and there's some interesting ones there:

Humility Cooper (baby girl)
Wrestling Brewster (boy)
Love Brewster (boy) ????
Remember Allerton (baby girl)
Damaris Hopkins (girl)
Oceanus Hopkins (boy)
Desire Minter (female)
Solomon Prower
Resolved White (baby boy)
Elias Story (manservant)
Degory Priest (boy)
Moses Fletcher (male)

.....all mixed in with the usual John, Martha, Mary, Elizabeth, Gilbert, Edward, Roger, William, Sarah, Dorothy, Thomas, Ann, George, Henry, Alice, Priscilla, Jasper, Ellen, Christopher, Edmund, Constance, Giles, Stephen, Samuel, Francis, James, Eleanor, Bartholomew, Isaac.

Amazing how some names just keep on keeping on.

But the others......phew.

Some of those names had me wondering about their conception...but then stopping and thinking outside of the box actually makes sense in a way with some of them.
