As an Aussie, we have fairly liberal laws on censorship, but know that the US are much more stringent.

So the question is ... what is a fair level of censorship? How and where do we draw the line? What are the fors and againsts for no censorship or total censorship?

Just thought I'd float the thread ?

Welcome to Lit. :)

A persons censorship is set my their values and beliefs.....

Too true

True, but being from NZ you are also granted a greater right to information than most other countries (including the US).

And, thankyou T.H. for the welcome !!! A pleasure to join in !

Yep, as a business person it is amazing what info I can find about people here in NZ than what I could living in other countries. :)

The U.S. is more stringent? What country are you from? Oh, yes... *censored*

Well Guru ... it's well known USA is extremely censored - more so in the Southern States ...

What the hell are you talking about? The only thing that's censored is nudity and adult language on prime time TV and radio.

Post it where ! :p

I proudly nominate my country of origin ... Australia ... even though our Prime Minister walks through the US and is completely unrecognised - I'm still proud to be an Aussie !!! (with minimal censorship !!! ;)

A worthwhile consideration...

In one of the military leadership courses I took (many moons ago) we were taught that you needed two things--power and authority. You could have the authority to lead but without power you would be ineffective. You could have power but without authority you would be corrupt.

In America you are "free" (most other countries as well) to walk where you want and when you want BUT most of us are not foolish enough to take that literally. There are exceptions and some of them are in the law and some of them are in the context. Many teenagers are restricted by curfews--that's a legal restriction of their freedom. Some neighborhoods are dangerous--for example if you are the wrong race walking in a wealthy suburb you stand a good chance of being stopped and questioned by security officers or police. This is a restriction not supported by law.

Freedom of speech is "guaranteed" in the bill of rights BUT it is often usurped by threats that are not legal but social in context. At my high school reunion in the buckle of the Bible belt (which I travelled back to the US for) I found myself censured by the majority because I write and publish erotica under my real name. Here in England it is no secret but I am not censured by friends and associates because of it. There is no guarantee of my freedom to express erotica ideas but in practice I "feel" that this freedom is realised to a greater degree here than in the US.

Just an observation--a personal one.

Thanks Closet

That's really insightful ... and having travelled through US, UK, Aust, and a few other places believe the same ... and agree to the same - there have to be certain constraints otherwise we'd never be able to live within a society.

Thanks for your post.

Not to start WW III

Sorry Pretty Lil Thing, I don't want to start a war here between the US of A and me ... I know who'll come out on top ...

Often the American news syndicates paint a particular picture for Americans, without sharing alternate sources. Or, worse, close down information so that it is not disseminated. Of course, there are state secrets, however, many books, films, etc are banned in areas of the US.

Though, I think reading this I'm opening a can of worms that will only get me increasing levels of irate criticism from Americans ... so I ask to curb this back to the original question ... what is the right level of Censorship ???

I stand corrected !!!

Well Pretty Lil Stranger ... my apologies for my misquote of your name ... but I like you already !!! :p

Enjoy a good argument, especially with the media. Though will take you up on the "media conspiracy crap" ... I think to say that media isn't biased and not often guided by what is relayed to them is also a short sighted view - media is easily swayed into believing what is fed to them at the time.

Is that censorship ???

oh for fuck's sake

look, Baraka, i know you're new and you're trying to have an intelligent conversation here. that's great, i applaud it, but your posts don't make any fucking sense. could you manage to put your thoughts into coherant sentences so i can actually figure out what the hell you're saying?

thanks.

You're Right Lexie

Well, you're right Lexie ... I am new ... have enjoyed a post and nurturing it into a nonsensical argument that started with a point of reference and ended with a list of ideas that had no end point ... but have managed to enjoy this little post all the same !!!

I will try to ensure my threads become more coherent in future !

:p :p

glad you're having fun. rumor has it that the whole point of this here bulletin board is to have fun. i don't believe it, though. the only reason i come here is to have cybersex with my online boyfriends and to engage in political debates.

and if you believe that i've got a bridge i'd like to sell ya.

Am Certainly No Expert

Well, cannot profess to being an expert, nor do I know enough about US media and government to make a "coherent" argument with facts and figures.

My initial question related to censorship and I've dawdled down the road of everything but ... alas, that is the mistake for avoiding an afternoon of work and creating a string of half thoughts and beliefs, combatting against an American "journalist".

Well, this non expert, must bid adieu ... but thank you for indulging my thread ... especially Laurel who pointed out the pending Australian laws.

No pretty lil stranger ... I wasn't sure if you were a journalist or worked in the media.
