Is it legal to write stories about celebrities? I remember reading something about that topic here in Sweden and at least here you're done for if you do it.

What does US/International laws have to say about it? Thanks!

Hi. Welcome to Lit. :) Luckily for you, this is a US based web site. And luckily for us all, Larry Flynt took on "all" when he chose to parody a public icon. There is a disclaimer at the beginning of the Celebrities section of Lit, and it shows up on the top of every story, that goes into this and includes a link to a different site further explaining Mr. Flynt's Supreme Court case in 1988.

If you wish, you can read the disclaimer. Otherwise, you can simply enjoy the knowledge that this site does allow celeb stories. :)

Of course, the Celebrity section has a lot of so-called FanFic stories which are clearly illegal almost anywhere in the world, since they breach copyright laws.

and there are some things celebrities just Won't do, at least not on Lit....nonconsent being foremost, since that might be seen as promoting stalking.

Vin Deisel. :D

His wife (famous pop star) told the world in a TV interview that he wears her thong. He wasn't happy.

This is what the Webmaster would like you to believe.
It is not allowed to use the copyrighted name of a celebrity without his or her manager's written permission.

You are not allowed to defame said character in any way, including in sexual themes in fan fiction (this is not usually challanged, but it's a rule they are clamping down on).

Story fan fiction (like Buffy The Vampire Slayer) is the only thing in that genre that won the battle, with the exception of bladegames.com (Buffy erotic adventure story).

It's not legal to copy and freely distribute video tapes either, but it's done.

Not in a first name only, such as Spike Lee VS SpikeTV, but a famous full name can be copyrighted.

Marilyn Manson couldn't use the name Monroe because it's already been taken, but it makes one wonder about Elvis Presley and Lue Costello.

Since there are 2 Julie Brown's in SAG, one must always be called "Downtown Julie Brown".

SAG rules only apply to SAG productions .

you are confusing copyright ( protection of an idea) with trademark (protection of a product or service or business trading name). Trademark regulation varies from country to country. Names can most often only be trademarked if associated with a product or service. In this area though, 'made up' name might actually be easier to protect than a 'real' name.

Some placces have legislation protecting famous names from exploitation. In other places, they rely on the tort of "passing off". That ois different from trademark, as it is easier to establishgh the rights, but requires proof of confusion to enforce. no reasonable pervert would confuse a Lit story with anything real.
