Any kind of writing starts with a nugget of an idea, and then it grows from that.
As an example, I once had this thought: "A story about the Northwest Passage". From only thought, further thoughts came, and it turned into a 90,000 word novel... then two more as it ended up being a trilogy of novels. 300,000 words all stemming from two words of thought "Northwest Passage".
The point here is that it takes thinking to turn nuggets of ideas into a story. Start asking "whom what, when, where, how, and why". When they play out, or you are writing it and get stuck, ask a series of "what if's". What if you were caught with her lingerie in the basement? The garage? The local library? See how things completely change by changing the setting. Try thinking of ways to make things worse. Never be afraid to write boldly, it is one of the top five things of writing rules... be bold!
If you ever get super, super stuck, come at the idea from the reverse. What if you were not caught wearing her lingerie, but your girlfriend/wife was caught wearing YOUR underwear... at the local police station? While it changes the whole story, that is the point. It can get you thinking creatively. You don't have to use ideas like that, but can get you out of writing jams, and perhaps take your story in a new direction.
Need inspiration? Take a long car drive, or read something you have written, and then take a long shower. Don't ask me why, but for some reason ideas flow freely for me when I am showering??? Maybe not in the shower, but when you think of things, make a note on your phone: names you hear that you like, thoughts about the situation you are writing about, all in all a writer is never divorced from what they are writing about. Thoughts and notes end up being stories in the end, but it all starts from a nugget of an idea.
