I request your suggestion about a category for a story. The protagonist is a sexual inexperienced male going through a bit of an awakening and finding his confidence. It ends with a HFN, but the protagonist has a lot of casual sex along the way. Eventually he realizes his female friend is actually in love with him and his experimentation is hurtful to her, even though they had only been friends up to that point. Because he's new to sex and intimacy in general, he wasn't picking up on it.

I thought maybe erotic couplings, because of several sex scenes that are strictly physical and not romantic, even though the ending is romantic.

Thanks!

Unless his experimentation is rather extreme, in which case you might be able to justify Fetish, I think you're right that this story would fit into Erotic Couplings. You might also consider First Time, if it does contain his first time, but I think that might be stretching it.

Premise sounds like me in my 20's, so I get it. I managed to kiss a few frogs before finding my princess.

IMO, Romance. If you want it to be realistic you'll want to limit the number of sex scenes in the development, because "inexperienced" means he does the same things over and over again while dating different partners. It would get boring.

Ha, I like the frog metaphor.

It definitely doesn't belong in first time. It might technically fit, but it's not really on point for what does well there. Definitely either EC or Romance. Nothing in it that warrants fetish, I wouldn't think.

Really, my question is whether romance readers are going to be put off by the casual sex with partners that are not the love interest. My instinct is to put it in romance, but it's more complicated than boy meets girl. EC feels a little more free form.

The readers in Romance might spank you a little for the extra sex, but you might get better results there than in EC, where the reaction is hard to predict.
