I have a kind of vague and ill formed question.
How much do people scope out the other sex in public, and in particular how much do folks try to meet the gaze of the opposite sex? (obviously, issue is a bit trickier for gays).
I get the personal impression that it is far more likely for my eyes to meet the eyes of a woman when I'm in a crowd, than the eyes of a man. But that could be my fault. So I want to know what other people think. I thought of doing a random experiment of walking down the pavement and glancing at the faces (like, for a second or two) of 10 men and 10 women going in the opposite direction and seeing how many reciprocal glances I got from each group. But I would have felt like some kind of werido, so I didn't try it.
Anyway, what got me to thinking about this was a trivial but kind of amusing incident today in which I was walking down the street, and a blonde babe was passing just to my right, about a yard to the front and the side. So I turned my eyes surreptitiously to check her out, only to find her eyes turned hard in my direction. And when she saw I had caught her looking at me, her eyes just zoomed back to the straight ahead position, as did mine. whistle, whistle, dum dee dum, act casual
Anyway, does this seem like more or less normal human behaviour? Or is this all in my imagination, implying I am some kind of aberrant freak and should check myself into a mental asylum?
