'Catastrophe': Trump uses 'phony energy emergency' to 'illegally' destroy state laws

On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) filed complaints against New York and Vermont over their climate superfund laws, which empower states to seek financial compensation from fossil fuel companies to help cover the costs of climate mitigation. The burning of fossil fuels is the main driver of human-caused global heating.

Separately, the DOJ also sued Hawaii and Michigan "to prevent each state from suing fossil fuel companies in state court to seek damages for alleged climate change harms."

"The use of the United States Department of Justice to fight on behalf of the fossil fuel industry is deeply disturbing."

Hours later, Hawaii became the 10th state to sue Big Oil for lying about the climate damage caused by fossil fuels. The Aloha State's lawsuit targets ExxonMobil, Chevron, Shell, BP, and other corporations for their "decadeslong campaign of deception to discredit the scientific consensus on climate change" and sow public doubt about the existence and main cause of the crisis.

"The federal lawsuit filed by the Justice Department attempts to block Hawaii from holding the fossil fuel industry responsible for deceptive conduct that caused climate change damage," Hawaii Attorney General Anne E. Lopez said. "The use of the United States Department of Justice to fight on behalf of the fossil fuel industry is deeply disturbing and is a direct attack on Hawaii's rights as a sovereign state."

The DOJ on Thursday cited President Donald Trump's April 8 executive order, " Protecting American Energy From State Overreach," which affirms the president's commitment "to unleashing American energy, especially through the removal of all illegitimate impediments to the identification, development, siting, production, investment in, or use of domestic energy resources—particularly oil, natural gas, coal, hydropower, geothermal, biofuel, critical mineral, and nuclear energy resources."

trump's fossil fuel buds are nagging him to make sure they don't have to pay out and trump's seeking to protecting them (and himself) against future claims against his 'drill, drill, drill!' agenda. Quid pro quos and all that.

It's time to stop the communist attack on the United States energy infrastructure being carried out by the feminized Democrat party.

There is no excuse for defending the fossil-fuel industry, even if you use entirely legal means to do it.

Excellent!!!!! It's about time those worthless shake down artists in the state capitals were hamstrung.

AlterNet is a left-leaning news website based in the United States.[2][3] It was launched by the Independent Media Institute.[4] In 2018, the website was acquired by owners of Raw Story.

And? Are you trying to display critical thinking skills?

The spin on how the information is presented and the choice of subject matter may be biased. Are the facts in the report biased?

The report is full of actual quotes from different parties involved in the legal filings. That is real - unlike many conservative pundit talking heads, this is an actual news report on what is happening, not bullshit opinions designed to scare or distract.

oh look, aging geriatric boomer trots out the ole "Shoot teh Messenger" response.

Needs moar George Soros, you numpty.

It’s fair to call a source into question.

The problem with BabyBoomer is that he doesn’t understand what a fact check actually entails.

If leftists want to hang their hats on the likes of AlterNet and people on the right want to hang their hats on the likes of Brietbart, that’s up to them. Both sides have highly partisan media outlets that slant their coverage to push an agenda. Nothing wrong with reading spin, but people who are unable to recognize it for what it is live in ignorance.

No. You don’t get it. Brietbart is prone not just to spinning, but also to bending facts from their source material. Check it out for yourself. They will often find some legitimate news source and inaccurately cite or quote it to falsely support their bullshit narrative.

The article in the OP of this thread uses accurate quotes and information. It may be offered in a biased manner but the facts are supported by reality - unlike typical Breitbart brain rot for MAGA sheep.

Here’s the very first sentence in the AlterNet article:

“Defenders of climate and the rule of law blasted the Trump administration….

Does that sound like objective reporting to you?
