One of the coolest things about cats is that contray to what most people and media would make you believe they are social animals AND they keep testing Dominant positions within that social group.

Most groups of animals only test when the leader gets weakened in some way but not cats. They are always at it.

Also cats, can be all loving and purry one minute then flip the script into play or violence the next. It's all mixed for them as it is for some of us.

Cats generally demand attention and quality time. They tend to do so with far more dignity and comportment than dogs.

Have you ever seen that PBS program on the behavior of cats that featured a farm populated by a huge colony of domesticated felines? They even babysit each others' kittens! I think one of the cruelest things a cat owner who travels a lot can do is to own a lone cat without giving it a companion... I would own a single dog, never a single cat.

Can you tell I love cats also? I've had feline companions ever since college. (It may be the one thing that ~D and I cannot work out when it comes to living together - hopefully not, but it's why I'm insisting on a "trial" period during which I will keep my apartment. I won't give up my babies.)

My cats don't leave the humans alone. They are very human centric. That's what I like about them.

I also don't like leaving them alone for days because of their need for human attention. Cat sitters aren't enough but it's the least I can do.

Sorry to hear about the loss of the kittens Satindesire. That is so terrible.

yah, i'm lucky - i'm gonna be gone a week and a half for vacation this summer but luckily one of the interns is gonna house sit. hopefully she'll like him.

When my boy picks on the girl should I yell at him? He doesn't hurt her. He just smacks at her ass and bites her butt. She gets in a submissive position and runs away when she has had enough. If they really got into it I think she'd kick his ass.

Tabitha's holding up well. Last night she meowed for her kittens for a while, but I think she's finally realizing they're gone.

I feel so sad for her!

That's the thing isn't it. As humans we can rationalise their loss but poor Tabitha - give her a hug from me.

She's really enjoying all the extra hugs she's getting. ^_^

On a side note, because the kittens were so little when they died, she still has a lot of milk and she's very warm and swollen in her belly area because she has no babies to drink it. Should I take her to the vet and have her looked at or will the milk just dry up on it's own?

I had a cat that lost a litter about 20 years ago - I am trying to remember what the reason was, but I believe it is a good idea to take her in. Hmmm... I'd call and see what your vet says. Neon

I think the milk will dry up and she's likely to go into season again. But I'm no expert from that point of view. All the cats I've had over the years have been neutered so I haven't investigated that far.

I agree with Neon. It won't hurt to take her in and she's probably feeling pretty uncomfortable if she's not 'using' the milk. They can give her something to dry it up. I know that dogs are a little different but my sisters dog recently had to be given stuff to dry up her milk - not after having puppies but after the new kitten my sister got started sucking her nipples !!!

Tabitha has had this habit where if I'm laying down on my back, she'll get up on my chest, knead her front paws on my boobs and sometimes sniff my face and eyes. Her whiskers tickle like mad! >_<;;

When Im sitting on the couch, my cat will crawl up on my chest and knead with her paws. I keep telling her no food there...oh well lol.

When shes on my chest she will suddenly push herself up and rub her face or neck against my face. Am I mistaken or is she saying Im part of her pride?

Re: the face sniffing - according to a show on PBS once on domestic feline behavior, it is a cat's way of saying "hello." Ever since then, when a cat sniffs me that way, I sniff back - they tend to prolong the behavior. When I've been gone on a trip, my Omar will sniff for a very long time. So I guess it is what Fury suggested actually - sign of affection.
