Alright, I've had a fair number of threads die out over time, for a variety of reasons, but the common theme between them all was that I based them on books or other media and so limited the number of people who could relate to the plot.
This is different.
This is open to anyone with writing skills and imagination.
Nearly all aspects of the setting, plot, and environment are yet to be determined, I'm simply trying to guage response for the moment.
The things that have already been settled upon are:
This will be a classical fantasy setting, i.e. dragons, elves, etc. all exist, there are no contemporary weaponry or characters, and magic exists.
Magic is slightly different than usual. In this, and only this, I'm borrowing from a book, The Legend of Nightfall, by Mickey Zucker Reichert.
If you havn't read the book, its no big deal, it just elaborates on what I'll explain here.
Basically, humans come in 3 varieties: Ungifted, Natally gifted, and Sorcerors.
Ungifted is obvious, it means no magic whatsoever, and reflects the vast majority of people.
Natally gifted are those born with a single magical talent. This can be mind reading, self-weight shifting, healing, etc., but must be limited to one single ability.
Sorcerors are the least common, being very rare, and are considered evil. Sorcerors have no actual abilities of their own, being instead distinguished by the power to steal the ability of another.
A sorceror is able to steal the gift of natally gifted person, by torturing them, using the intense pain to bring their gift to the surface where they are able to absorb it and enslave the victims soul for their own use. Their is no limit to the number of abilities that a sorceror can posess, though he/she must aquire each from a seperate person. They can also steal from each other, and thus multiply their powers, since another sorceror usually has more than a single power, unlike the gifted. Once the ability is taken, the victim dies, the death being the culminating factor which seals the power to its new owner. The only limitation once the power is sealed to a sorceror, is its duration. A sorceror uses his new ability in a different manner than its original owner. He does not simply invoke it on his own; he invokes it through the soul of its true owner, which is enslave to him. Hence, each time the ability is used, it weakens the hold the sorceror has on the soul, and eventually the ability is lost. Other factors, such as fatigue, rage, etc., that could cause loss of control, also affect this. The time factor is rather long, we're not talking about hours or days or weeks, here, but years, but care should still be taken.
I will elaborate, based on people's questions, but I want to see what people think of this first.
I'll also need someone to play the villain, since I have no intention of being anything other than a playing character, and perhaps a referee, should there be some problem.
Sorcerous characters should be rare, gifted uncommon, and normal is average.
At the moment, I'm encouraging only human characters, but if you should like to play something else, I'm receptive to the idea.
(Hint: the more detailed and interesting your bio and idea, the more likely I am to allow it.)
Please, no gods or god-like beings, this is a low-level (for now) setting, though cadidates for the villain should of course play a little fast and loose with this rule.
(though still no gods)
I'll be basing the plot to some extent on the profile of the villain, so please, feel free to elaborate.
