Some where around the house I have a stash of old Playboy cartoons, my favorite was "Grandma". If I can find it I'll scan some of the better ones.

Well ... Found my pack of Playboy takeouts.

Tried to scan one, HP scans the cartoon ok, BUT I have no way to reduce the size to post maximum without losing all the detail. By the time HP gets the pixel size low enough to post, the image is unvewable.

Try resizing with irfanview.

If that doesn't work, try scanning at a higher resolution and then resizing with irfanview or check to see if HP has a "resample" option in addition to the "resize" function.

All HP offers is bits per inch as the variable. The Image size is not variable. The program that came with the scanner is total **** , it covers, Camera download, scanner, printer, Scrap book, post to web, all in one crappy program.

I Do not have a good photo program, just Paint brush.

The DPI or "bits/inch" setting does change the "image size" in real terms i.e. the number of pixels in the picture.

Check out www.irfanview.com -- it's a free image management program that works with image's true size instead of an arbitrary "print size." It might also pick up the TWAIN input hook and allow you to scan directly into irfanview instead of scanning, saving, reopening theimge to resize or crop.

If you have MS Office, you should also have MS Photo Editor -- MSPE is not the best image editor around, but it's better than Paintbrush and most editors bundled with scanners or printers.
