I went on a cruise a long time ago. St. Lucia, St. Thomas, Curaçao and I don't recall the other place. I think we flew to San Juan (not positive about this). It was humid and the hotel smelled like an old wet towel. That went on my list of places to never visit again.
I have a t-shirt somewhere, it lists the cruise info. I'll have to find it.
One of the places we went to, instead of going on a tour we went with a random guy giving tours. I look back now and think of how dangerous it could have been, but it was really fun. We drove past coconut trees and he stopped to get us one from someone on the road.
We also passed by these run down shacks, crowded together, looking like they were going to fall apart. They looked like really old, small wooden barns that had been abandoned for years. I had no clue what they were and our guide told us they were houses. It was sobering. They were very tiny and it was hard to imagine someone living there. Coming off the boat you would never think the country was so poor. What we call poverty in the states is nothing like the poverty we saw.
He did take us to the beautiful spot with a waterfall. It was small and very remote feeling. It was a different kind of quiet there, a peaceful quiet. We paid him a lot when he brought us back since he was a great tour guide. The waterfall was very far away and he was very friendly.
I recall a few other details but everything was so rushed and it didn't feel like we had time to relax and enjoy everything. Even though I know I had fun, I have never had the desire to go back.

Interesting experience. I've only been to St.Lucia in-transit. I'm familiar with Barbados and the people are warm and friendly.

Going to look at a few places soon. We like one place on Deborah Bay just east of the airport & several properties in the Speightstown to Holetown areas which is where I'd prefer

I found a really nice little island last year - Culebra. It's very undeveloped and low key with no resorts. It has great beaches all around the island with good snorkeling. Turtles, Rays and nice coral. It's part of the US too, which means you don't have to do currency conversions, there are no language issues and you don't even need a passport because it's part of Puerto Rico.
I've also had opportunities to visit St. Lucia, The Cayman's and several parts of the Bahamas including the Out Islands which are far less crowded than Nassau and Freeport.

I would recommend Holetown for you then. Lovely place. The beaches there are lovely and it has a lively night life.
