Eden Gabriel stood there in what was left of a once great chapel in her homeland. The international assembly of soldiers had turned it into a communications and briefing post. Her arms were crossed as she listened to the complaints of the monks from the outlaying areas about all the blood and death and how it was not good and surely there was some other way. She was calm with them but when one of the soldiers who seemed to know or at least understood part of what they were saying tried to step in her eyes turned to venom and her demeanor seemed to turn ruthless and cold. Some of the soldiers in the room would leave some had strange looks in their eyes and others just seemed suddenly more terrified of this civilian woman than the war raging all around them. She was there on her own but ended up as a translator when she was asked to be one by the villagers who call her family.

Miss Gabriel...

The American soldiers have returned and appear to have found some of the nomads you had informed us about and have brought them here to safety.

She turned back to the priests and asked them to tend to the nomads before turning to walk out of the chapel growling at the massive Italian Corporal who attempted to follow as an unwanted bodyguard.

So Americans... what all did you find?

Her tone always seemed to bristle the team commander yet he also didn't seem to want to gain an internal enemy so he simply nodded to one of his men to deal with her. Her arms crossed as she waited for an answer. Her eyes revealing nothing as she looked this American over waiting for him to talk.

"Sir?" Corporal Aaron Bennett looked at his lieutenant, "she is a civilian."

The unit commander turned back to them, "she may be, but she also is the only person here that the locals respect." There was a pause as he considered something, "Actually you will be her liaison and bodyguard...stick to her like glue. Consider it punishment." The lieutenant turned away and led the rest of his men off to get some much needed food.

"Punishment for what...saving a girls life," Aaron muttered barely loud enough for anyone to hear.

His commanding officer was way beyond earshot so definitely did not. That was a good thing, because although he was a good soldier, Aaron had the tendency for discipline issues at times, never on a mission though, until now. He had disobeyed his order to sit tight and observe the nomads they were sent to rescue. This had resulted in an unprepared fire-fight, but also the saving of a few nomad's lives, least of which the young woman that had been dragged off by a few straggling rebels.

Aaron turned back to the impatient looking woman who he had been tasked to communicate with.

"Ma'am," he tried to maintain respect, "from what we could gather with our rough communication, we managed to escort the whole group back here to safety."

He studied her to see her reaction. She was sultry and beautiful, but with the hidden venom of a spider.

"There was small group of rebels pursuing them, which we encountered and dispatched. Now if you would accompany me, I believe we are to stick together as one, and I need to see the medics." He indicated to the field dressing on his right hip, "I got wounded, nothing major but may become infected."

Unacceptable... you go to medical and I will endure this overgrown oaf of a bodyguard while I go and talk with the Nomads. If your commanding officer has a problem with that... Send him to Me... I will deal with it.

Turning sharply she hissed at the Italian bodyguard who sighed thinking he would have been free of her till now. He looked to Bennett

Bennett... lunch tent give her hour we will be there.

He was going to object, not wanting to disobey another order, but seeing as she had already began to move off with the bodyguard in tow, he remained quiet. He would have his say later when she met him at the mess tent.

He did however take the time to admire the flow of her retreating hips. The woman may be self important but she sure had the figure to match her beautiful face. This may not turn out to be the worst assignment he had been given. It was just a pity that the environment did not lend itself to sexier dressed women.

An hour later Bennett found himself patched up, cleaner and fed as he waited for his new charge to meet him in the mess.

They were sitting waiting as she was surrounded by the children they had just brought back. She was smiling and relaxed helping them get their food and find a place to sit and eat. Her Italian bodyguard walked over to him.

Bennett... She is... important to people here and when soldier is with her they accept them a little better... you have fought the reasons they do not trust soldiers. Maybe they will accept you too. She can be difficult though you are warned but worth what you have to put up with. She has her kind moments.

"Kind moments," Bennett nodded, wondering just how kind those would be.

He rose from his seat and walked over to the table where she was surrounded by the kids. Most of them backed a way slightly but a few of the braver ones stood their ground, especially those who remembered he had helped save them.

"Ma'am," he said as he crouched down, not wanting to look down on her. "I know we may have gotten off on the wrong foot, but I am only obeying my orders." He looked into her eyes, hoping she did not notice his eyes had taken a few moments to study her body, "from here on out we are stuck together."

She stared at him holding her hand out to calm the children.

Well then lets get this one thing straight. These people mean more to me than any of you do so you will NOT shoo them away or treat them as a threat to me Period. You will treat them with respect and accept that Soldiers to them are all the same in most cases and not to be trusted. Is that clear?

She watched him and then glanced to one of the little boys who tried to move to stand almost protectively between them warily watching the soldier with his little mouth twisted up as if trying to look intimidating or something.

The young boy standing between them looked so determined to be intimidating, that he was forced to smile.

"Ma'am I understand their importance to you, but unfortunately the rebels understand your importance as well."

He was trying to think of a way to warm himself to the children, when an older girl approached the young boy and whispered something to him. The little boy looked at him again before dropping his intimidating sneer and stepping out the way. Bennett recognised the girl when she turned to face him. It was the same one he had protected with his body, and had resulted in him being shot.

"All I am saying is I need to act as your bodyguard, but I have been told to obey your orders."

Fine... If I decide to go out of this infernal camp to watch the stars in peace I WILL go...

She smiled to the children and sent them on their way to play once they were done eating.

The Market is NOT off limits to me... these are my people being oppressed here I will be among them and show they that I am NOT going to run away till the oppressors are gone once and for all even if I have to deal with them myself. I have seen more combat in these lands than most of the soldiers here have seen in their lifetimes...

Her eyes staring through his as she almost seemed to smile but the smile more cold and determined than anything.

He did not know why, but her cold stare made him bow his head slightly in submission to her will.

"Very well, my lady," he looked back into her eyes, "I will not dictate your actions. Just give me the respect of not trying to escape my protection."

He smiled at the thought of being so close to this beautiful woman.

"When you watch the stores or frequent the market, I will be right beside you."

His smile broadened.

"When you sleep at night, I will be right there beside your bed."

There was a faint smile on her lips at everything he said a poker face as her mind returned to her normal life and all the images of him being transformed into a part of that life.

Good but I dress and change ALONE is that clear.

He laughed at what he assumed was a joke from her side. He had said he would sleep beside her, and she had countered with a joke about dressing alone. Obviously he did not expect to even enter her tent ever, but rather just implied he would always need to be close to protect her.

Maybe the Italian soldier had been correct, maybe she had a soft side. He had already seen it with the children.

"Obviously, " he said with a smile, "but we bath together, it would be more convenient. "

He did not expect her to respond to this lighthearted jibe, so he stood.

"Where to now .... ummm. ...my lady?"

He didn't know what else to call her, ma'am seemed to annoy her.

She smirked at his tossing a joke back so freely and the smirk remained through the "my Lady"

No deal...

For now however with all the extra people here we will need to run to the market the monks garden here can not handle everyone. I don't care if anyone does not like it we will leave just now and return just after nightfall more than likely. So lets go.

He nodded, "very well my lady, we can go, but out there I am protecting you. So you will obey me when it comes to question of your safety."

He shouldered his rifle which he had purposely kept inconspicuous while the children were around.

"You lead the way."

Once again he wished she was dressed in something a bit more form hugging. But then that may also prove embarrassing, as she was very appealing and he had not interacted with a woman in a long time.

Be very careful of what you think is a threat then agreed... these people do not trust soldiers and well looking at your clothing one of those that I know or one of my people could think there was a problem. Not all of them can tell any difference from one uniform to the next.

She sighed truly sick of this bodyguard madness but she knew the drill and would tolerate it for now at least it was no longer that insufferable Italian guard. She began walking out of the camp only to have someone try to stop her.

Listen Soldier... we have at least 25 new people here with the nomads who were led here... unless you want to hand over your rations of food I WILL be going into town to the markets for more food for everyone and that is final Now get out of my way so I can get a jeep and go try to get enough food to help cover everyone for a day or two. NOW!!!!

"Please my lady, he is only doing what is expected of him."

He stepped between the two and turned to the guard, "she has permission to move about more freely, and I will be with her all the time."

The guard looked at him suspiciously.

"You can check with the captain, he has given me the orders...she will never leave my side."

After a long pause the guard nodded and stepped aside allowing Aaron to lead them to a vehicle and waving to the gate guard to let them through.

When they had settled in the jeep and Aaron was driving them towards the market he turned to her with a relaxing smile.

"You know you are very tense...I understand this war is a lot more personal to you than any of the soldiers her, but you need to relax a bit."

"Out there," he pointed in the direction they were heading, "you how to handle the locals and how best to interact." He tried to make his smile look friendly, "but when it comes to dealing with the soldiers let me handle it...I will do anything to help you relax."

Very well... for now... These people do not believe in war they do not believe in harming anyone so having soldiers here even those that are protecting them and trying to liberate them are seen with suspicion and fear. They have dealt with these oppressors for nearly 100 years without the world caring till now... they do not trust it and truthfully neither do I... I have seen what your government and the other world governments have done once they have "liberated" some poor "helpless" people.

She sighed and stared at the market and remains of the town coming into view.

SO much of the beauty destroyed so many dead and for what. Some global belief that might makes right or what can be stripped from the world. All men know is destruction subjugation and darkness.

Looking to him seeing that smile and those eyes and sighed again.

I will relax when all this is over.

He didn't really have an answer for her, so he gently placed his hand on her arm to transfer a reassuring touch. It was a common gesture where he came from. A means to show your support for someone in distress. Realising the touch may be unwelcome in her society he removed his hand quickly, but not before giving her arm a light squeeze.

"I am sorry, I really have no answer for you, and I fear perhaps you are correct. Many times governments become involved in situations for reasons outside of the benevolent cause they claim."

He returned his hand to the steering wheel as they neared the town. Here the throng of people and their pack animals became greater and he wanted to have total control of the vehicle as he slowed down to match the pace of the streets.

"Unfortunately I am but a soldier who is to obey his orders, though sometimes I do question them for what seems right." He smiled, "and this often gets me into trouble with my superiors. But I promise that out here I will obey your orders without question."

He looked at her briefly and grinned, "I don't recall being commanded by a female before, despite there being a lot of female officers that outrank me, though not many here."

She just nodded and pointed out the market to him and prepared to get out of the truck in case she had to calm any of the locals as usual. Stepping from the truck once it stopped she caught a rock being thrown by a young boy and shook her head at him. Seeing who was there they moved closer to her and watched her travel companion warily. She tried to explain to them who he was and that he was helping her gather food for some rescued Nomads and that he was a friend. It was a hard sell to the elderly who ran the market and constantly tried to keep themselves between the soldier and their friend. The children were also none too trusting of his presence and many ran to get adults who she again explained his presence to. Stopping to listen to some of the "Adults" who were barely out of their teens her temper grew quickly as her jaw clenched at whatever news they were giving her. Her eyes narrowed as she turned to Aaron The anger seething through her she was barely able to speak.

There are... several children here from the outlying area were found this morning wandering around covered in blood some nearly catatonic and others hysterical. One of the older children was eventually able to talk. They were made to shoot their own parents when the parents would not sat that the oppressing army was the true saviors of this land and that their religion and true leaders where evil. I want them dead... ALL OF THEM... forget peace talks forget negotiations. All they know is death and killing innocent people...

She was shaking anger and tears that would never see the outside world nearly convulsing through her form as she looked at him. Trying to calm before walking to the market.

He was used to the horrors of war, but even that shocked him. A soldiers job on the field of battle could be violent, but this was a level of barbarism that one could never except. He did not know how to react. This beauty that had stirred feeling of desire in him was now so vulnerable and distraught. All he could do was look at her with sadness before the words finally came out.

"I will obey your orders...if you command me too, I will slay those responsible."

She just looked to him and nodded as she walked towards the market talking with the locals as she went.

They do not understand why I require a bodyguard. I am native what are you and your fellow soldiers afraid of. They do not understand that you and yours are not keen on the idea that I am willing to die for this land just as they are if the Gods say they must die in this life.

Getting to the market she snarled seeing some soldiers at the far end of the road. Her eyes narrowed as she fought the urge to walk right up to them and slaughter them herself. For now they did nothing but she would keep a close eye on them while they picked up supplies.

Again he was unsure how to react. He could see she was angered and frustrated by all that was happening in general. He knew that if she was too close to the soldiers she might lash out at them and then their reaction would cause a conflict.

Instinctively he reached out and grabbed her hand, stearing her into a market stall.

"I know you are angry, and there is nothing I can do to ease your misery." He released her hand, "but you need to relax, your anger will do no good for your people, if you cause a scene and are harmed."

Looking around, he noticed what wares the stall was selling. It looked to be clothing, though not the expensive, flamboyant type his girlfriends would usually go shopping for when wanting to destress.

"What do you normally do to relax?" He paused, considering her answer would most likely be some form of selfless act. "For yourself, not your people. What does the beautiful woman standing in front of me do to reconect with her happiness?"

There are a couple of clubs I tend to go to they are not even on this continent so any other ideas?

She was livid at the presence of those soldiers from the occupying invaders she wanted to see them dead. She may have been born of calm and peaceful people but she knew far too well that death was all some of these other countries understood.

He was a bit surprised that she would attend clubs, he imagined she would find such things frivolous. But his mind couldn't help imagining her dressed up and shaking it on a dance floor, it would indeed be a sight to behold.

"Well it is not up to me to decide what you enjoy, but I will do anything to make your wish come true."

One thing that would work was for those invading soldiers dying but I know you can't do that without reason so let us get what we came here for and go before I do something we both might have to kill our way out of.

With that she turned and stormed off to the other side of the market where there was food and began talking to the locals to see what all they could get to take care of those at the temple.
