I think the Cardinals all left Rome. They've been replaced by Yellow-Bellied Sapsuckers!:p

My AOL headline says "Pope says sex scandal is crime" (or something to that effect)

WTF???? Did it just dawn on the Pope that molesting little boys might be wrong??? I don't get it.

They quoted him saying that on the news here too. It did strike me as a bit odd.

I don't know if would help if they altered any of the altar boys,* but I heard that after three days in Rome, the Cardinals had a weekend home stand against the Dodgers, and then it was back on the road to Montreal, New York and Chicago.

*Pet peeve No. 753: Alter/Altar

they're supposedly trying to come up with a position on women priest too

I just don't understand the whole thing...why is it pedophiles go to jail for fucking children but priests just get re-assigned?

Because E, the Catholic Church thinks they are above the law of the land. (Yes I'm catholic)

But, it just makes no sense, Lo...this whole thing confuses the hell out of me. I understand they think they are above the law...and since they get away with it, it appears they are. How come that is???

Damn babe, I didn't say I could explain it. :D

Honestly, I wish I did know the answer to that question.

Why do/did nuns get away with rapping you on the knuckles with a ruler or worse? When they'd have been thrown in jail "out in the real world".

The Catholic church has a lot of questions to answer, but I fear we'll never know even a small amount of answers before we are gone.

Sorry for the little bit of fluffery above. . .

for estevie:

The got away with it for many years, because no one told the civil authorities. Neither the perpertrators nor the victims. The controversy now before us is that the eclesiastic authorities did in fact know, and did nothing. What sparked the current events was the trial and conviction of that particular priest in the Boston area, and the revelation that he was systematically shuffled around the diocese with the knowledge and approval of Cardinal Law.

But over the years, the cases that did become public have been prosecuted.

The scandal has, in a large part, to do with the nature of authority. It was abuse of their clerical authority that gave the priests in question the power over their victims. It's abuse of authority on the part of hierarchy to cover-up the crimes.

Actually they can. IF the family presses charges, what usually happens though is the family is pressured into letting the church handle it. The Church is famous for using peoples faith to it's own end.

Piper I love your AV!

Historically, the Church has always harbored sexual predators. During the witchhunts, it was an opportunity to sexually torture women and gain any property they might have had. Many of the saints were torture experts from the Inquisition.

Yes, I read about the priest in Boston...but things like this have been happening for years and years...I just wonder what has taken the Pope so long to intervene...he had to know. If we can't count on the Pope to do the right thing, well, holy shit!

what I would like to see happen...

would be for all the members of the diosese who had knowledge of a priest molesting a child and did nothing except re-assign said priest to be brought up on charges.
Reckless endangerment of a child, accessory after the fact and such.

Good point E! Makes ME wonder how many of the higher ups are guilty of such atrocities (?). How many living over in Vatican City are guilty of such things? How can they live with themselves? how can others knowingly live with them?

Yes, I understand that..I know that some priests have been prosecuted in the past. Why didn't the Pope step up then? I know I'm asking questions that can't be answered...but its just all so maddening!

I guess all you can say is that it's a power trip. For 17-centuries, the church (R.C.) has been the single most powerful entity in the western world. Before the printing press, it had almost exclusive control over culture, art, education: in short Information. And it is secretive, as a way of keeping the power. And the majesty. And it is hierarchical, meaning "you do it our way, keep your nose clean, you'll go places, kid" organisation.

There is no explaining this away. Just like the Inquisition, just like the support for fascism. They have sinned, they have sinned, they have most grieviously sinned.

I agree, too bad that will never happen! :(

Kotori, my newest AOL headline says "Sexual abuse is an appalling sin" Pope says. How sad...so very very sad.
