So, what does one do with four quarts of dirty motor oil? My first thought would be to toss it down the gutter and my second would be to flush it down the toilet - I'm certain this would have karmic repercussions though. Any other ideas?

Pour it into the empty containers that your new oil came in and take it to one of those quick oil change places. They'll dispose of it properly, may charge you a small fee, but it's better than polluting your own water supply.

All large chain auto parts stores accept used motor oil, at least here in California- I'm not sure about other states.

Just pour the old oil into the empty containers from the new oil and take it to an auto parts store like Kragen or Napa.
