"Really?" she asked, intrigued. "I never imagined that there would be a need for such things. What might he need?"

Alexis shrugged. "It really depends on the mood of the nation, but hey. You never know." She sighed. "I considered acting once. A long time ago. But. . . something never felt right when I acted, like I was missing something. Now, it comes naturally. Probably 'cause my life depends on it."

"That does tend to make you learn it quickly," she said, laughing for the first time since she had been captured.

Alexis smiled warmly at Paige's laugh. "It does. I'll admit, it's not easy," she confessed, tidying everything up and checking the time. "But, it's my life. I love my job. It's given me solace when there's none to be found."

Alexis smiled and pulled out the bed for her. It was a nice sized bed, with a TempurPedic and warm blankets. "I'll find the pillows," she said. "And if you want. I wouldn't, simply 'cause it's silk and that wrinkles easily."

Alexis chuckled and tossed Paige a pair of pajamas and placed a couple of pillows on the bed. "There. I know it's not home or anything, but," she shrugged. "I try. Now, I have to get going. Is there anything else you need at this moment?"

Alexis saw the joke and nodded, smiling. "Price you pay," she teased as she exited the cell. "Good night, Paige."

She strode back to her quarters and sat on Nikolai's lap, resting her head on his shoulder.

As Alexis left the room, she saw Paige fluffing up the pillows and turning over to go to sleep. The unit guard gave her a trusting nod.

Nikolai smiled at her weakly. "You're looking better than me. Not actually out of the ordinary, but still nice," he said, taking her hand as he tried to sit up.

Alexis helped him sit up and chuckled. She kissed his forehead. "You're looking better, though," she said, smiling. "Lots better, actually."

"I heard bits and pieces of what happened to you," he said understandingly. "And that sounded horrible enough without the whole story."

"I'm frankly upset," she confessed. "It's. . . the worst feeling, knowing that the only way to save someone from pain is to inflict pain. And, I wanted to end it so bad, but I couldn't, because I was powerless. . ." Tears filled her eyes.

Nikolai had no idea what to say, so he just held her close and ran his fingers soothingly through her hair.

Soon, Alexis lifted her face away from Nikolai's chest, and wiped away the few remaining tears. "Thank you," she said quietly.

She dabbed away the tears and the make up and she snuggled into him with more of a smile. Later, she would tell him the whole story. Now, she just wanted to cuddle.
